HOCKEY: Trenton nearly stumbles against De La Salle

The Trenton hockey team hit the ice in Mt. Clemens Saturday night carrying an 11-game unbeaten streak that included a 4-1 win over previously No. 1-ranked Livonia Stevenson a week ago.

All of that was in danger of being negated when the Trojans blew a two-goal lead and found themselves in overtime against Warren De La Salle.

But junior Quinn Preston came to the rescue, scoring in the extra period to give the Trojans a hard-fought 3-2 win.

Preston had also scored in the third period to give his team a 2-0 lead at the time.

Aaron Arturi assisted on both Preston’s goals and Phil Pugliese also drew an assist in the game-winner.

It was Pugliese who scored the first goal of the night for the Trojans in the opening period. Preston assisted on that one.

“We caused our own problems,” Trenton Coach Mike Turner said. “”We were all over them the first couple of periods. We must have had 10 goal-scoring opportunities, but their goalie kept coming up big for them.

“Then, we started taking penalties and we blew a two-goal lead again.”

Trenton led 1-0 into the third period and outshot the Pilots 29-14 through the first 34 minutes.

Preston scored early in the third period for a 2-0 lead, but De La Salle got one back midway through the final period and then scored on a power play late to knot the game.

De La Salle outshot Trenton 14-8 in the third-period, but Trenton won the shot battle 8-0 in the overtime and 43-28 for the game.

Goalie Nick Ramirez got the win.

The Trojans will need to use Saturday’s result as a wake-up call as the toughest and most important stretch of the regular season is up next.

Trenton hosts Novi Detroit Catholic Central tonight and goes to Oak Park to face Birmingham Brother Rice Saturday.

Next week the Trojans face Port Huron Northern, Hartland and Traverse City Central at the Michigan Interscholastic Hockey League Showcase.
