WRESTLING: Huron League roundup (TOUT VIDEO)

The Huron Chiefs took control of the Huron League wrestling race on Wednesday with a 34-28 victory over a strong Monroe Jefferson team.

“This win puts in the driver’s seat for a fourth straight Huron League championship,” said Huron Coach Keith Shulaw. “It was a tough dual that went right down to the end.”

Both teams came into the meet undefeated in league meets. Only the Chiefs left unblemished.

Tied at 28-28, heavyweight Jeff Henderson got a pin at the 4:21 mark of the third period to give the Chiefs the victory.

The dual started with Bailey Zablocki (103 pounds) overcoming a 9-0 deficit and pinning his opponent in the third period. Steven Poet won a big decision at 125 pounds and Jon Wellman won on a pin at 130. Nick Phelps got a major decision at 135. Logan Ritchie pinned at 160 and Rieley Griffin earned a decision at 171.

On Saturday, the Chiefs finished fifth at the Williamston Classic, just one point behind Anderson for fourth place.

Placers for New Boston were Judah Caballero (third place at 112), Eli Caballero (fourth at 119), Wellman (second at 125), Deion Copley (third at 215), Henderson (third at heavyweight) and Logan Ritchie (first at 160).

Logan also was the Upper Weight MVP. In the finals he defeated a highly ranked undefeated wrestler from Bay City Central.

Riverview

Riverview hosted a quad meet on Monday, which was a makeup from an early scheduled event postponed because of bad weather.

The Pirates lost the first dual of the night to Carleton Airport 45-30.

“The team effort was a little disappointing,” said Coach Jason Dodd. “We got stuck seven times and that's just not acceptable.”

Winners for the Pirates against Airport were Michael Wright (103 pounds), Marina Goocher (119), Collin Barron (125), Brandon Garcia (145), Victor Korkis (152) and Josh Wojtowicz (171).

The Bucs bounced back in the second dual bouncing Milan 66-9 to improve to 11-5 on the season.

Winners against Milan were Kyle Sparks (112), Goocher (119), Barron (130), Alex Hall (135), Teddy Lossing (140), Garcia (145), Korkis (152), Marcus Wright (160), Wojtowicz (171), Caleb Barron (189), Evan Begeman (215) and Kyle Terrell (285).

On Saturday, Riverview finished third out of 20 teams at the Lincoln Park Orange and Blue Classic. The top five teams were Monroe (208 points), Carleton Airport (196), Riverview (184), Belleville (175.50) and Melvindale (175).

Garcia, a sophomore captain, won at 145 pounds with four first-period pins.

Senior Lossing (135), sophomore Wright (103) and freshman Evan Begeman (215) all finished second.

Junior Sparks (112) was third.

Senior Wojtowicz (171) was fourth, Korkis (152) was fifth and Terrell (285) was sixth.

Freshman Aaron Mullins (112) surprised everyone with a seventh-place finish and a 2-1 record, including two pins.

“Aaron has been a JV wrestler for most of the year, but teams were allowed to double enter wrestlers at the same weight at Lincoln Park and Aaron made the most out of his opportunity,” Dodd said. “Aaron has shown really good improvement of late and it showed on Saturday with him placing for the first time in a varsity tournament.”

Riverview wrestles at the Saline Super Duals on Saturday and then have its last regular-season league dual on Wednesday at home against Grosse Ile. It will be a spotlight dual and Parent and Senior night all rolled into one.
