It took four extra minutes, but the Cabrini boys’ basketball team managed to hold off visiting rival Gabriel Richard 52-51 in overtime Tuesday night in a Catholic League thriller.

Cabrini senior guard Robert DeBlander grabbed a key offensive rebound with the score tied and was fouled on the put back attempt with 2.6 seconds remaining in overtime. After making the first free throw, DeBlander missed the second but Gabriel Richard was unable to get a shot attempt off and time expired.

“It was a rivalry game so we came ready to play,” said Cabrini Coach Gerry Klos. “We got a young team with only three seniors and we’re learning how to play together as a team. I was not hoping for an overtime game, but we played hard and stayed after it.”

The game started out slow as both teams struggled to find the bottom of the net. Colton Jarratt scored six points for Gabriel Richard in the quarter and the Pioneers led 9-7 going into the second.

Cabrini found its shooting stroke in the second quarter, especially from behind the arc. The Monarchs' David Szczesny scored ten of his game-high 23 points in the second, including two big 3-pointers, and Cabrini went into the half up 26-23.

The two teams came out of the break and traded baskets in a back-and-forth third quarter.

Jared Hicks scored six points in the quarter for Cabrini, but Gabriel Richard kept itself close by hitting three 3-pointers and went into the fourth trailing Cabrini 39-36.

Cabrini used its defensive pressure to force Gabriel Richard into five early fourth-quarter turnovers that resulted in a 7-0 run for the Monarchs and a double-digit lead, 46-36.

Gabriel Richard Coach Kris Daiek called a timeout to settle down his players.

“Sometimes we get a little fast; get a little out of control. So we tried to get five or six passes instead of one or two,” said Daiek. “I thought once we slowed down a bit and got things back under control, it allowed us to get back into the game.”

The Pioneers answered with a 13-3 run of their own and tied the game at 49 on a left-handed tip in by Jarratt with 16 seconds remaining.

Cabrini thought it had won the game in regulation following a layup at the buzzer by Tyler Syer, but the referees waived it off when it became apparent that clock had not started properly.

Szczesny led all scorers with 23 points and added 7 rebounds. Scott Smith scored 13 points for the Monarchs.

Jarratt led Gabriel Richard with 18 points and 10 rebounds in the losing effort.
