With senior Cassie Breen sidelined by a knee injury, the Woodhaven girls’ basketball team knew they needed to pick up her load in order to bounce back from the team’s first loss last week.

Enter Hailey Leidel and Allison Manning.

Leidel, a sophomore, double-doubled with 20 points and 13 rebounds, and Manning added 11 points, including the game-winning three-pointer with only 22 seconds left in the game to help Woodhaven (11-1) edge Roosevelt (6-6) on Tuesday night by a final score of 45-42.

The first half featured multiple lead changes and was very back and forth until Roosevelt’s Halie Fratangelo caught fire late in the second quarter.

Fratangelo hit five consecutive field goals (including a three) for 11 points. Her outburst put some temporary distance between her Bears and the Warriors on the scoreboard, as Roosevelt went into the half with a 30-22 lead.

But Leidel came out of the intermission like a woman possessed, scoring her team’s first three buckets to immediately undo Fratangelo’s second-quarter efforts. Leidel also outworked her opponents on the defensive end as well, grabbing four rebounds in the third quarter and sprawling to swat a Roosevelt pass down, which she then dived out of bounds to save for her team.

Roosevelt only managed one field goal in the third quarter, and that didn’t come until the 2:38 mark. Still, Ron Adkins’ Bears battled hard enough to keep Woodhaven’s momentum from snowballing, and the game wound up being 32-32 by the end of the third.

Adkins said he realized his team’s offense was stagnant for much of the second half, but said that was kind of by design, as he wanted to grind out the game.

“Our goal was to keep (the score) in the fifties,” he said. “Woodhaven beat us by 26 last year so our main concern was keeping them from getting into too much rhythm on offense. So we tried to really slow down our possessions and that kind of worked against our offense a little bit. But we did keep the score down.”

The Bears broke out of their offensive funk a bit in the fourth quarter, getting a couple much-needed field goals on broken plays by Sydney Greene, and then a clutch pull-up jumper by Nicole Ostrowitz with 59 seconds left in the game to tie the score at 42.

But the game wouldn’t be tied for long. With 22 seconds left, Manning hit a partially-contested three-point basket from the top of the arch to put the Bears backs against the wall.

This left Adkins time to draw up one last play.

“The play we ran was called a ‘Swing,’ where the point guard goes one way and we have another girl come around a screen on the perimeter to try to get an open look. Unfortunately for us they defended it well. Their girl picked up on it and left her assignment to get a hand on it. She did a great job.”

That girl was Nicole Losek. Her steal with just four seconds left led to a foul underneath her own basket. She missed the technical free throw, but the ball fell idle right below the net. Losek alertly ran and picked up the live ball and the remaining 0.9 ticked off the clock to secure the Warriors’ 45-42 win.

Woodhaven Coach Rodney Scharboneau said his team has been coming up big in clutch scenarios like this all season long.

“Hailey Leidel played a great game tonight; Allison battled and hit some big shots; Erin (Marvaso) battled,” Scharboneau said. “Our girls are used to winning and they’re used to fighting because it seems like every game we get our opponent’s best shot. It’s a lot of fun for us and it makes for some great games.”

Leidel’s 20 points and 13 boards were both game highs. Fratangelo paced Roosevelt with 13 points, while Alea Kainz led the Bears in rebounds with seven. Woodhaven won the overall rebounding battle, 29-24.

The Warriors will go for their 12th win of the season this Friday night against Trenton. Roosevelt will look to get over the .500 mark when they welcome Melvindale into Wyandotte on Thursday night.
