After an undefeated week, the Flat Rock girls’ basketball team remains the only undefeated squad in the Huron League.

On Jan. 13, a close first half turned into a strong second half for the Rams as they topped Riverview 48-37.

Flat Rock led 13-9 after one quarter before the Bucs won the second quarter (13-11) for a 24-22 halftime advantage in favor in the Rams.

In the second half, Flat Rock did not allow more than eight points while the team put up 24 points itself to boost its score.

It was a night of the Paige’s for the Rams who were led by Paige Villemure and Paige Nemeth in both rebounds and points.

Villemure finished the night with 17 points, four rebounds, three steals, two assists and one block while Nemeth contributed 14 points, seven rebounds, four steals and one assist.

Holli Rhodes contributed eight points, two rebounds, two steals and one assist.

Riverview was led by Anastasia Smith with nine points and nine rebounds.

Angela Zammit had eight points and five rebounds and Hannah Love finished with seven points and nine rebounds.

Riverview’s woes continued as the team remained winless in the Huron League and dropped another close game on Thursday.

The Bucs hosted Huron and found themselves on the losing end of a 41-39 game after leading through the first half.

It was a close 8-5 Riverview advantage after the first eight minutes before the Bucs opened things up in the second quarter and outscored Huron 15-11 for a 23-16 halftime advantage.

But Huron adjusted at the break and dominated the third quarter to win the outing 18-8 for a 34-31 advantage after three.

Riverview won the final quarter 8-7, but it wasn’t enough for the comeback.

Zammit led the hosts with 10 points while Michala Burke finished with nine and Love added eight points and six rebounds.

Savannah Floyd led the visitors with a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Floyd was also 2-for-3 from the free-throw line.

Hailey Richardson had a strong game with 11 points, eight rebounds, four steals, three blocks and two assists and Elizabeth Stockert finished with 11 points, four rebounds and three assists in the win.

Earlier in the week, Huron suffered its first league loss of the season at the hands of Airport in a 40-36 contest.

Floyd once again led the Chiefs with 12 points and also had seven rebounds and a steal. From the charity stripe she was 4-for-6.

Richardson finished with a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds to go with three steals and an assist and Stockert added seven points, four rebounds, three steals and two assists of her own.

The Grosse Ile girls finished the week 2-1 in a busy week of Huron League matchups.

On Friday the team breezed past Jefferson to a 61-32 victory.

A 19-10 first-quarter advantage turned into a 41-17 halftime lead and the Red Devils breezed from there.

Grosse Ile only outscored the Bears 8-6 in the third but a 12-9 advantage in the fourth quarter secured the victory.

Andrea Plemmons had her best game of the season with 10 points and seven rebounds.

Morgan Swick also contributed 10 points and finished with five steals.

Sophomore Erin Carney finished the night with six points, nine rebounds and three assists.

“I am really fortunate that each night I have someone different leading us in statistics,” Coach Sandy Tobin said. “It is making us a strong team.”

The Red Devils started the week by cruising past Milan and won the game 53-19.

Defense was key in the win and Grosse Ile never allowed more than six points to be scored during each quarter.

A huge first quarter (21-5) led to a 30-9 halftime lead and it was 47-15 after three.

Brianna Chamberlain and Swick each had 10 points.

Hayley Mehr also had a great game and hit a three-point shot, a nice jump shot and had three assists that kept the team fired up.

Grosse Ile hosted Huron on Monday and will travel to Riverview tomorrow. Huron travels to Jefferson tomorrow. Riverview was at SMCC on Monday while Flat Rock traveled to Airport the same day and will host SMCC tonight.
