Scoring was abundant in the Grosse Ile hockey team’s first game back since the holiday break.

The Red Devils took on Dearborn Heights Crestwood in the SEHL showcase over the weekend and knocked off the Chargers 8-6.

Crestwood was ahead 2-0 after the first period and added another two in the second. Grosse Ile got on board in the second with three goals of their own and tied things at 4-4 in the final period before pulling away for the win.

In the final 17 minutes the Devils outscored Crestwood 5-3 for the win.

Grosse Ile saw a variety of players contribute to the win.

Bob Bialobrzeski and Avery Swain had two goals each and single goals came from Jacob Ketelhut, Dean Ziberi, Stephen Plyler and Garrett Jakinskas.

Dominic Trombley, Alex Pflum, Ketelhut and Ziberi had two assists each and Ziberi scored the game winner.

Coach Jason Durbin said the team did not have a good first period, but it could be faulted on the long break.

“It was the first game back since Christmas break,” Durbin said. “I’m not gonna say I expected that, but sometimes when you have a layoff like that, that happens.”

Despite the win, Durbin is looking for improvements heading forward.

“It was definitely not what I was looking for as far as a start out of the gate for us,” he said. “In the second and third we played better, but ultimately, we’ve gotta tighten up our own zone.

“That’s too many goals we should be giving up.”

Thomas Rofe was between the pipes in the win.

“He’ll be the first one to tell you he struggled,” Durbin said. “But two or three of those goals, we hung him out to dry.

“Offensively, it was good to see that we could score eight goals, but we need to tighten up defensively and that includes the team as a whole; the forwards to the defense to the goaltenders.”

The Red Devils will be busy this week with three games on the schedule.

They took on Flat Rock last night and play St. Mary Catholic Central on Thursday and Huron on Saturday.

The team will be playing without two upperclassmen due to injury during the week as they look to continue the winning streak.

“We’re gonna be looking for more wins,” Durbin said. “We’re 4-7 right now and we’ve got about 14 games left.

“Our goal as a team is to win 10 of those 14 and that’s gonna be a little bit harder now, but that’s why you carry 21.”
