BOYS' BASKETBALL: Summit Academy suffers first loss

In its first loss of the 2013-14 season, Summit was dropped 60-48 last Friday night at home by defending Charter School League champion Chandler Park.

The Dragons (6-1, 1-1 CSL) got 20 points from standout Cory Hicks, which led all scorers for the evening.

“This type of game was a definite learning experience for my club,” said Summit Coach Craig Lewis. “Chandler Park was very athletic and challenged our ability to play relentlessly.”

Lewis said he was impressed with the play of Hicks, as well as fellow guards Jesse Brown and Leavohn Lewis, as the trio stepped up in the face of the Eagles’ full-court pressure and ultimately knocked the visitors out of their normal rhythm.

However, Lewis said his squad didn’t match Chandler Park’s intensity on the boards for much of the game

Despite the defeat, the Dragons battled the entire way and showed they have the potential for an extraordinary season, Lewis said.

“Overall, I was proud to see them fight to the end,” he said. “I am impressed with their effort and with a little more work in the gym they will be a special group of young men for Summit Academy.”

The Dragons were home last night for a battle with Dearborn Heights Star International Academy and on Friday will travel to Detroit Old Redford Academy.

Grosse Ile Beats SMCC

In its Huron League opener last Friday night, host Grosse Ile was edged 40-37 by Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central.

Danny McCarty scored 17 points to lead the Red Devils (1-4, 0-1 Huron) in the game. Also, Tyler Moores finished with eight points and five rebounds, Justin Moores came away with six points and six rebounds and Tommy Daly had six points and five rebounds.

Grosse Ile was up 11-6 at the end of the first quarter, but at the half led only 16-15 and after three quarters trailed 27-18.

“We played a great defensive game but unfortunately we were ice cold shooting in the second and third quarters,” said Devils Coach Bryan Friel.

However, in the final quarter the locals were able to charge back and with 3:30 left reclaimed the lead.

Down the stretch the two teams went back and forth, but with 45 seconds to go Grosse Ile turned the ball over and SMCC quickly converted on the other end with an easy layup.

The Devils still had a chance to tie it up before time ran out, but a late shot missed and the contest wrapped up with the Falcons on top 40-37.

Despite the defeat, Friel was pleased with his group’s strong defensive effort against the tough visiting squad.

“I can't give my team enough credit for the job they did on defense and rebounding against a much bigger SMCC team,” he said.

Last night the Devils took on Monroe Jefferson at home and tonight will welcome in Riverview for a makeup game from last week. On Friday night Grosse Ile will be home once again and will take on Airport.

Huron loses to SMCC

To kick off league play, Huron hosted Milan last Friday night and was crushed 74-35 by the Big Reds.

For the Chiefs (0-6, 0-1 Huron), Tyler Olson led his squad with 14 points, while teammate Austin Bell was second with nine points and Justin Carey finished the night with four.

Zach Schlarb led the team in rebounds with four, while Olson, Carey and Grant Wood each pulled down three for the locals.

Last night Huron traveled to Flat Rock and on Friday will be on the road again with a game at Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central.
