Hillman is county champ for third time

Wayne County Championships

Woodhaven came away with a seventh-place finish at the Wayne County Championships, held Dec. 14 at Roosevelt.

The Warriors’ Derek Hillman (189) went undefeated en route to his third consecutive individual county championship and Austin Avison (140) finished runner-up in his weight class.

Also for Woodhaven, Devin McClain (125) and Jared Ammons (152) earned fifth place in their respective weight classes, while Billy Duncan (160) and Tyler Christian (215) both took eighth.

As a squad, the Warriors earned 103 points at the 26-team event, which was won by Plymouth, which picked up 200 points.

Lincoln Park also competed at the event and took 13th place with 51 points.

For the Railspiltters, Tyler Castillo (112) and Quinn Chapman (145) finished third, Sonny Botello (171) took fourth and both Jesse Jividen (103) and Branden Bussell (130) came in seventh.

In 15th place as a team was Summit Academy, which finished with 36.5 points. The Dragons’ TJ Barnes (160) finished runner-up to the champ in his weight class, while Daryl Conley (215) was ninth and Dillon Patrick (125) took 12th.

Tournament host Roosevelt finished 21st at the event and earned 21.5 points. Collin Vargo (135) placed fifth for the Bears and his teammate Angelo Bartolo (140) was seventh.



Don Anderson Invitational

With 209 points, Carlson brought home a championship Dec. 14 from the Don Anderson Wrestling Invitational at Napoleon High School.

The Marauders got first-place individual finishes from Max Underwood (160), Doug Bunea (189) and Zack Underwood (215) and in second were Mason Brott (125), Travis DeRossett (130) and Alex Franco (140). Billy Gibson (130) and Nathan Skuratovich (135) both took third and Michael Sanders (285) was fifth.

“We wrestled very good overall,” said Carlson Coach Lance Hassell. “It was a team effort and we really got some tough, gritty wins.”



Redford Union Panther Invitational

Led by eight wresters with 5-0 records, Melvindale took first place on Dec. 14 at the Redford Union Panther Invitational.

The Cardinals’ undefeated run through the tournament included wins against Lutheran Northwest 71-6, Crestwood’s B team 79- 0, Garden City 60-12, Redford Union 71-12 and Lutheran Westland 62-15.

Individual Melvindale wrestlers perfect on the day were: Matt Curmi (103), Sammy Almoharmy (112), Ben Durisin (125), Josh Hoak (130), Ameer Munassar (135), Skylar Slotka (140), Dylon Maki (160) and Manuel Roldan (189). Also, Munassar was named the tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler for the lower weights.

Cards with 4-1 records for the day were: Julian Saldana (119), Ryan Large-Agee (145), Fadel Harhara (152) and Ross Ladach (171).



Melton Memorial Duals

Trenton competed in the Dave Melton Memorial Duals on Dec. 14 at Huron and came away with a third-place finish for the day. The Trojans went 3-2 as a team, beating Chippewa Valley 55-16, Novi 52-20 and Yale 48-24, but losing to tournament champ Huron 33-30 and runner-up Howell 39-36.

Trenton’s Connor Charping (135) was 5-0 at the event and 4-1 records belonged to Jackson Rickman (119), Ian Collier (125) and Vince Bartaway (160). Trojans going 3-2 for the day were Brandon Russo (112), Caleb Coleman (130), Jack Thomas (189), Josh Berry (215) and Ean Purcell (285) and Brad Boler (140) was 2-1.



Ypsilanti Lincoln Tournament

At the Dec. 14 Ypsilanti Lincoln Tournament, Allen Park wrestled to a 2-3 record and a ninth-place finish out of 16 teams.

The Jaguars earned a 39-30 win against South Lyon East and a 38-36 victory against a unified team made of up of extra wrestlers.

Against tournament champ Addison the locals lost 67-12 and were also dropped 42-28 by Walled Lake Western and 33-18 by Clawson.

Tim Durocher (189) posted a 5-0 record for Allen Park, while Dustin Sabourin (215) was 4-1, Devin Tenerowicz (112) was 3-2, Andy Garza (145) was 2-2, Matt Skarbinski (130) was 2-0 and Ben Lewis was 1-0.
