VOLLEYBALL: 2013 All-News-Herald Team

Another volleyball season has come and gone and local teams made it quite the year.

Allen Park and Gabriel Richard each found themselves spots in the regional finals after district championships.

The Jaguars regional final highlight was winning a game against a very strong Bedford team.

Riverview and Grosse Ile got a regional berth after a district championship.

Riverview knocked off host Anderson for the district championship and earlier in the season went to the finals of the News-Herald tournament and won the Taylor tournament for the ninth straight year.

Grosse Ile got to the regional round after and exciting district round that included a big win over league rival Huron in the semifinals and a district championship for the first time in 11 years.

In the Catholic League, Allen Park Cabrini got to the CHSL C-D championship game before falling to Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes.

The Downriver League came down to the final game and Roosevelt and Allen Park went head-to-head and at the end the Jags were crowned champions.



Here is a list of the 2013 All News Herald team.



Alyssa LaFace, Allen Park- LaFace was a big part of the Jaguars’ success this season. On the way to a Downriver League championship and regional final appearance, the outside hitter led the team in kills (531) and aces (77). The junior also finished with 414 digs and nine blocks. LaFace also recieved all regional and all-state honorable mention honors.



Kate Tobin, Grosse Ile- Just a sophomore, Tobin helped the Red Devils to a regional semifinal in her second varsity outing. She finished the season with 450 kills, 248 digs, 56 aces and 14 blocks. Tobin was named to the first team All Huron League, the all region team and was all state honorable mention.



Sydni Pauley, Roosevelt- Pauley was an outside hitter for Roosevelt this season, helping the Bears to a second-place finish in the Downriver League in her final varsity outing. The senior finished the year with 324 kills, 230 digs, 65 aces, 40 blocks and 27 assists.



Aevah Hebda, Trenton- A junior middle hitter, Hebda heped the Trojans to a third-place finish in the Downriver League this year. She finished the season with 312 kills, 43 assists, 28 aces, 594 digs and 72 blocks.



Kendall Grzywa, Riverview- Grzywa led the team in digs this year as she helped lead the Riverview volleyball team to a regional semifinal appearance in her role as libero. She finished the season with 923 digs, 118 aces and 1,062 passes on serve receive. She was also named to the All Huron League first team.



Nina Galati, Grosse Ile-

Galati was all over the floor for the Red Devils this season. The senior finished the year with 1,133 assists, 231 digs, 91 aces, 71 kills and 14 blocks. She was also named to the first team All Huron League and the all region team and was an All Scholar athlete.



Marissa Sims, Trenton- Sims was a setter for the Trenton Trojans this season. The junior finished the year with 856 digs, 851 assists, 40 kills, 58 aces and 5.5 blocks.



Nicole Robinson, Woodhaven- Robinson was a middle hitter for the Warriors’ volleyball team this season. The senior finished the year with 134 kills, 98 blocks, 23 aces and a .230 hit percentage.



Santina Galati, Grosse Ile- Galati capped her senior season with a regional semifinal appearance with the Red Devils. She recorded 288 kills, 184 digs, 32 aces and 10 blocks in her last campaign. Galati was also named to the second team All Huron League and the all region team and was an All Scholar athlete.



Leah Pletcher, Woodhaven- The senior outside hitter led the Warriors on the floor all season. Pletcher finished with 210 digs, 186 kills and 41 aces.



Melissa Mazurek, Riverview- Just a junior, Mazurek led the Bucs in kills and blocks this season as an outside hitter. En route to a regional semifinal appearance, she recorded 363 kills, 92 blocks and 255 digs. She was also honorable mention on the All Huron League team.



Tara Poikey, Roosevelt- The setter led the Bears in assists and digs this season. Poikey finished with 1,213 assists, 242 digs, 121 kills, 80 aces and eight blocks.



Felicia Bozman, Allen Park- Just a junior, Bozman led the Jags in assists in her role as setter this year. En route to a Downriver League championship and regional final appearance, she recorded 694 assists, 324 digs, 115 kills, 70 aces and 12 blocks. Bozman also received all-league academic and all region honors.



Kennedy Bradley-Stevens, Lincoln Park- The senior outside hitter led the Railsplitters in aces, kills and blocks this season. She finished the year with 110 kills, 73 digs, 30 aces and 25 blocks.



Deanna Smith, Riverview- A setter for the Bucs this season, Smith led her team in assists with 1,176. The senior also recorded 188 kills, 132 aces and 327 digs en route to a regional final appearance. Smith was named to the All Huron League first team and will be playing volleyball at Owens Community College in Toledo next year.



Niki Polce, Huron- Polce was the heart and soul of her team this season and dominated defensively to help keep her team in every game. In her role as captain she helped her team win three tournaments this season. Just a junior she averaged eight digs, 1.8 assists and 1.7 service aces per set.



Ciara Woods, Roosevelt- Woods led the Bears in blocks this season en route to their second-place finish in the Downriver League. She finished the year with 55 blocks and also contributed 215 kills, 60 digs, 48 aces and 11 assists.



Hailey Richardson, Huron- The Chiefs’ top offensive threat, Richardson averaged 4.7 kills per set while hitting a .411. She was a versatile player who also averaged 2 blocks per set and 2.1 digs in the back row. In her role as captain, she also helped Huron to three tournament championships this year.



Hailey Brandes, Anderson- An outside hitter for the Titans this year, Brandes helped the team to a district final appearance. She finished the year with 275 digs, 250 kills, 50 aces and served at 88.5 percent. She was also named to the all region team.



Alex Friedrich, Gabriel Richard- Friedrich found herself a spot on the All-News-Herald Team for the second consecutive year. The senior led the Pioneers in kills and blocks, averaging 2.96 kills and 1.6 blocks per game on the way to a regional final appearance.



Rebecca Cashmer, Anderson- In her role as libero, Cashmer helped the Titans to a district final appearance this season. The senior finished the year with 472 digs and 76 aces and served at 92 percent.



Veronica Leonard, Allen Park- In her role as libero this year, Leonard led the Jaguars in digs with 636. She capped her senior season with a Downriver League championship and regional final appearance and also recorded 72 aces, 53 assists and 39 kills.



Samantha Miller, Cabrini- Miller led the Monarchs in several categories this year in a season that saw a CHSL championship game. Miller finished the year with 438 digs, 314 kills, 75 blocks and 32 aces.



Samantha Dymon, Flat Rock: A middle hitter for Flat Rock, Dymon was also a captain for the Rams. The senior finished the season with a .183 percent attack and .355 percent assist and had .625 blocks and .829 digs per game. She served at 81 percent and have a serve receive of 90 percent. She was voted second team all league and her coach called her a hard worker with a lot of heart and passion for the game.



Monica Dziuba, Gabriel Richard- The senior led Richard in digs this year in a season that included a regional final appearance. She averaged 3.4 digs and 2.6 kills per game.
