GIRLS’ BASKETBALL: Anderson cruises past Allen Park to remain unbeaten

Southgate squad led by Tinara Moore's 27 points

The size of the Titans girls’ basketball team front court proved to be too much for the Allen Park Jaguars on Thursday night, as they led from start to finish and won by a final score of 61-40.

Senior center Tinara Moore gave the Jags fits all night and finished with a monstrous stat line of 27 points, nine rebounds and seven blocks to lead Southgate to victory.

Moore and power forward Leah Malam kept the Jags out of the paint for most of the night and they really seemed to intimidate Allen Park in the first quarter, holding them to only three points on one first quarter field goal.

The Titans took an 18-3 lead into the second quarter but sputtered a bit and allowed Allen Park to go on an 8-0 run to end the half. Southgate’s solid all around play and dominant first quarter still helped them trot into the locker room with a 30-17 advantage after two quarters of play.

Allen Park took that momentum into the second half, where two of their starters got very hot in the third quarter. Ally Kubik and Casey Bowdell combined for 16 of the Jaguars’ 18 third quarter points. Moore scored ten in the third for the Titans, though, to keep Allen Park at bay.

Down by 13 heading into the final quarter of play, Allen Park’s offense went cold. The Jags scored only five points in the fourth quarter and Allen Park Coach Chuck Perez said he thought his girls just weren’t patient enough in the first and fourth quarters.

“We really didn’t come out to play in the first, and I think overall, we were a little more patient in the middle two quarters,” Perez said. “We used more pass fakes and made better decisions, especially in the third. And then Casey and Ally scored about 80 percent of our points. Overall, our transition just wasn’t as good to start and end the game.”

Southgate outscored the Jaguars 13-5 in the fourth quarter to shore up the 61-40 victory and improve to 4-0 on the season. Titans Coach Larry Sakalas said he was happy his team came to play against an Allen Park team that was also undefeated coming into the game.

“Allen Park is a very good basketball team,” he said. “It took us awhile to get our game going and we just gotta work on coming out of the locker room in the second half as energetic as we do to start games. Other than that I thought we played decent.”

Moore led Southgate in both points and rebounds and Amani Corley also played very well in the win, scoring 10 points with two three-pointers.

Bowdell and Kubick finished with 16 points apiece to pace the Jaguars, and Bowdell also led Allen Park in rebounds with six.

The Jags will take a 3-1 record into an Inter-City contest on Friday night. Southgate will look to keep rolling when they hit the road to take on Downriver League-rival Wyandotte on Tuesday.
