BOYS' BASKETBALL: Carlson takes down Grosse Ile in season opener

After playing a close game early on Tuesday night, Carlson was able to pull away from host Grosse Ile and earn a 58-46 victory in the boys’ basketball season opener.

The Red Devils led 20-13 after one quarter of the nonleague battle, but the contest was tied at the half and in the final 16 minutes the Marauders outscored the home team 27-15.

Leading the way for Carlson was Jared Henson with 17 points, Jarrett Atkinson (11 points) and Prince Ideozu (10 points). Seniors Danny McCarty (17 points) and Tommy Daly (15 points) were Grosse Ile’s top producers.

The Red Devils seemed to be in control to start, putting up points on offense and holding the Marauders down on defense.

McCarty and Daly combined for 14 first-quarter Grosse Ile points, including a three pointer from Daly. Eric Smorch also hit a first-quarter three pointer for the Red Devils and teammate Ramone Stewart added four points, giving the hosts the seven-point advantage after one quarter.

In the second quarter, the Marauders comeback charge included a trio of three pointers, with Henson hitting two and Kyle Cox netting one.

Cox added two more points in the second quarter, while Mark McDade scored four and Alex Rahming had two.

Henson said his team will only improve this year, much like it did after the first quarter Tuesday night, and he believes the squad can bring home its third consecutive district title in the postseason.

“I feel good, I feel we’re going to be better,” he said. “We’re going to work hard in practice and I see another district championship coming up.”

Grosse Ile managed eight second-quarter points from McCarty, along with three from Daly, and the contest was tied 31-31 at the half.

Early third-quarter points from Henson and Ideozu gave Carlson a 36-31 lead, but two free throws by McCarty and a three pointer from Tyler Moores tied things up again.

At that point, Atkinson got hot for the Marauders and scored nine points in the last three minutes of the quarter, including a three pointer at the buzzer. Grosse Ile’s only answer during that stretch was two points from Wyatt Garner, and the Marauders were up 47-38 after three quarters.

Carlson Coach Rob Raymond said that holding off the Red Devils’ scoring attack in the second half was the key to his team generating points of its own.

“A lot of our offense feeds off our defense,” he said. “If we don’t play defense it’s hard for us to score. If we don’t play well (and) we don’t play hard, they get easy shots.”

The Marauders’ fourth quarter featured two more points from Atkinson, four points each from Henson and Zach Kohn and three from Ideozu.

With about two minutes left in the game, Grosse Ile pulled to within seven points, making it 53-46 after five quick points from Daly. However, it was all the visitors would yield and they went on to score five more points to secure the 58-46 victory.

Grosse Ile Coach Bryan Friel said that many of his players are lacking varsity experience right now, but the squad will improve as they see more time on the court together this winter.

“We’ve just got to keep working,” he said. “We’ve got a lot of young kids. They just need to keep getting in games and getting better. We’ll get better as the season goes on.”

Next up for Carlson is a game Friday night at Roosevelt, which will open the Downriver League season for both teams. The Red Devils will play again next Tuesday in a nonleague game at Richard.
