After a high-flying two-game start to the new season, the Trenton hockey team found itself back down on earth last week.

The Trojans were buried in an avalanche of Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook goals in their home opener a week ago and lost 8-4.

The team responded with a much better effort against Novi Detroit Catholic Central in Plymouth Saturday, but still got stuck with a 4-3 loss.

“We had a practice (after the Cranbrook game) and we told the kids to put it behind them,” said Coach Mike Turner.

“We said, ‘forget about it and just go play,” and that’s what they did Saturday.”

Saturday’s game was as close as the final score indicated as CC outshot Trenton just 29-28.

Trenton scored the first goal of the game, but then fell behind 4-1 before rallying in the third period.

Griffin Sawyer had two of the Trenton goals and Mitch Galea had the other.

Quinn Preston had two assists and Aaron Arturi and Phil Pugliese had one each.

After giving up eight goals against Cranbrook, Trenton goalie Nick Ramirez bounced back and played another strong game, his third in four outings.

Wednesday’s game with Cranbrook started well enough and the teams were tied at 1-all late in the first period.

But the powerful Cranes scored twice more before the period ended and then scored early in the second period and just that quickly they were up 6-1.

“We didn’t play well at all,” said Turner. “Cranbrook started scoring and they just kept on scoring.”

Trenton did finally right the ship and a natural hat trick in the second and third period by Preston made the final score more presentable.

Justin Dunn scored his team first goal of the night; it was assisted by Conor Cunningham, who had three assists in the game.

Trenton is now 2-2 on the season and the Trojans will host Roosevelt tonight and Birmingham Brother Rice on Saturday.
