Last Friday's Gabriel Richard-Everest Academy game was WDIV Channel's 4's Football Frenzy game of the week and the Pioneers and their fans really got in the spirit. With the crowd cheering wildly in the Richard gym, Channel 4's Ashlee Baracy got a lift from the taem. Photos by Anna Lisa Fedor
All’s well that ends well, right?
Last year ended well for the Richard football team as the Pioneers won their last two games after dropping the first seven.
This year, Richard is off to a 2-0 start after knocking off Clarkston Everest Collegiate 33-13 on Friday night. Richard won the opener Aug. 30 over Flat Rock.
So for those keeping score, that’s four in a row dating to last season for second-year coach Thomas Michalsen and the resurgent Richard football program.
The Pioneers would like nothing more than to end the season well again. But first things first, and so far, so good.
“I thought we played well on Friday night,” Michalsen said. “We played very good on defense. We have to get rid of the mental mistakes if we are going to compete against the good teams in our league. Right now, we are focusing on getting better so we are ready when the league schedule starts.”
The Pioneers have one more game to “get ready” as they host Dearborn Heights Star International at 7 p.m. on Friday. The real test comes Sept. 20 at Allen Park Cabrini, one of the favorites to win the league.
Richard rolled out early on Friday night, scoring three touchdowns on its first five possessions of the game. Now that’s an effective offense.
Junior Tyler Blaszczak took off on a 45-yard run to put Richard on the board and give the home team an early 7-0 lead.
After the defense held, forcing a punt, the offense went back to work. Tyler Riney, another junior running back, raced 40 yards to give the hosts a 13-0 lead.
Another defensive stop and another punt for the visitors. And, you guessed it, another touchdown for Richard. A simple trap play resulted in a 90-yard touchdown run by senior Devin Dickow and a 19-0 lead.
Everest got on the board to cut the lead to 19-6.
But late in the second quarter, quarterback Jake Lipetzky hit Blaszczak on a 20-yard scoring pass to give Richard a 26-6 halftime lead.
Everest scored in the third quarter to stay in the game, cutting the Richard lead to 26-13. But the hopes of any comeback ended on the next kickoff when Blaszczak ran it back 90 yards for a Richard touchdown.
Blaszczak had three touchdowns on the day, one rushing, one catching and one on the kickoff return. Dickow led Richard in rushing with 128 yards on the ground.
Lipetzky was 2-for-6 passing for 48 yards and a TD.
Joe Lavine led the defense with five tackles.
