Boys Tennis: 2013 private school season preview

As Cabrini heads into the 2013 tennis season, Coach JR Muniz will rely heavily on eight returning players from last season. Four seniors, three juniors and a sophomore will help lead the way.

Paul Williams, Steve Hecmanczuk, Parker Carney and Paul Pursifull are the squad’s returning seniors.

Last season, Williams and Hecmanczuk made up the Monarchs’ No. 1 doubles team, but Muniz said they could split up this year.

“They have the most experience and may end up in singles,” Muniz said of the pair.

Returning juniors on the squad are Nathan Kress, Ben Trela and Logan Shultz. Muniz said Kress has a good chance at earning the No. 1 singles spot.

Sophomore C.J. Franklin will battle on the court for a spot, as well.

The Monarchs open their 2013 season on Thursday with a non-league meet at Trenton.

In what will be Shane Holzworth’s second season as head coach at Richard, he will have to replace six seniors from last year’s team.

Holzworth will look to his five returning players to help carry the load for the Pioneers in the 2013.

Seniors Jon Rhind and Sam Jakubik have returned for their senior seasons. Joe Pappas is a junior who is back on the court again and both Jack Poslajko and John Ames are sophomores heading into their second year of high school tennis play.

“We are going to rely on the returns to step up big time this year,” Holzworth said.

As practice got underway last week, Holzworth said no singles or doubles spots were set. To determine who gets which spot, he said there would challenge matches among the team members.

Richard’s first scheduled meet of the 2013 season is Aug. 26 on the road against city rival Riverview.
