Here are the members of the 2013 All-News-Herald Wrestling team. All the athletes are league champions, state-meet qualifiers or both:



Jared Ammons, Woodhaven

Ammons was a Downriver League champion for the Warriors at 152 pounds. In the meet he defeated an opponent who had previously beaten him twice earlier in the season. Ammons also had a fourth place finish to qualify for regionals where he was seeded fifth. He wrestled well in a deep pool of talent and upset the No. 2 seed in a 16-6 major decision.



Jacob Balogh, Anderson

At 140 pounds, Balogh helped the Titans to their sixth-straight district title and third-straight DRL title. Balogh was one of four champions at the DRL meet in February. At team districts he won by a decision in the semis and a void in the finals.



T.J. Barnes, Summit

At 152 pounds, Barnes was the powerhouse behind the Dragons. Only a junior, Barnes was the top local placer at the state meet in his second consecutive trip. There, Barnes finished third in the D3 finals with three decision victories for the bronze medal. To get to the state meet, he had a second place finish at regionals with an opening round pinfall and a decision win in the semi finals. This season Barnes broke the school record for career wins and set the record for single season wins. He finished the season with a 55-4 record.



Andrew Barron, Melvindale

Barron also went undefeated in team districts to help Melvindale to its championship. At regionals, the senior placed second after a 5-3 decision and a 15-7 major decision placed him in the finals and sent him to the state meet.



Vince Bartaway, Trenton

Bartaway made a trip to the state meet at 145 thanks to his third place finish at individual regionals. He also recorded a pin in team districts and finished fourth at the Downriver League meet.



Sonny Botello, Lincoln Park

Botello was a Downriver League Champ for the Railsplitters after going 3-0 on the day and winning his final in triple overtime. He was also a champion in the team districts in both the semis and the finals.



Brandon Brooks, Huron

Brooks showed versatility this season by winning a Huron League championship at 119 pounds and finishing second at districts and fourth at regionals at 112.



Judah Caballero, Huron:

After placing at states as a freshman with Grosse Ile, the sophomore transferred to Huron where he won a Huron League championship at 103 pounds and took third at regionals for another trip to states.



Matt Cuimi, Melvindale

Cumi finished a champion at the Downriver League meet for the Cardinals and was the sole winner for his team. En route to his victory, he defeated two wrestlers that he had previously lost to earlier in the season.



Deion Copley, Huron

At 215 pounds, the junior was a district champion, a runner-up in the Huron League and a bronze medalist at regionals this season.



Dakotah Dockter, Flat Rock

The senior 215-pounder was a Huron League champion, a runner-up at districts and regionals and finished fourth at states for the district champion Rams.



Joe Ferguson, Huron

The talented senior posted another stellar record (52-7) and claimed a Huron League championship at 135 pounds and a district championship at 130 pounds. Ferguson finished third at regionals and took sixth at states for the Chiefs.



Jarad Fernandez, Anderson

Fernandez had quite a year for the Titans and finished with a 50-10 record. At 112 pounds, he was the Downriver League champion as well as the individual district champion. In team districts, Fernandez was by pins in the semis and the finals.

He earned himself another trip to states after finished second at regionals with a 6-2 decision. At states, Fernandez won a 4-2 overtime decision.



Brandon Garcia, Riverview

The 140-pounder was dominant in his rookie season for the Bucs with Huron League and district championships. The freshman finished runner-up in regionals and competed at the Division 2 state finals.



Derek Hillman, Woodhaven

Hillman’s fall and 11-3 major decision at regionals helped him to a second place finish and sent the 171 pounder to the state meet for the second consecutive year. There, Hillman finished fourth place. He won a major decision and two decisions en route to the third place match. Earlier in the season, Hillman was a DRL champion as well as an individual district champion with a 7-3 victory in the finals. He finished the season with a 47-4 record.



Johntson Logan, Riverview:

The senior heavyweight earned a Huron League championship at 285 pounds.



Josh Lockwood, Anderson

A regional qualifier last season, Lockwood had another successful season with the Titans at 152 pounds, and finished with a 37-11 record. Lockwood finished second at both the DRL meet and individual districts. In individual districts he recorded a pin in the finals. He was the final Titan to place at regionals with his third place finish. To get to the state meet, he recorded a fall at regionals. At the state meet, Lockwood recorded a fall 21 seconds into his first match.



Mike Long, Huron

The senior heavyweight was a runner-up in the Huron League championships and took third at regionals to earn a trip to states.



Dakota Martin, Riverview

The freshman was one of four league champions for the Bucs and took gold at 145 pounds.



Dylan McLeod, Lincoln

Park

McLeod was the second Downriver League Champion for the Rails, going 4-0 on the day. It was his second time as league champ for Lincoln Park. He also finished third at individual districts.



Alex Molloy, Anderson

Molloy led the Titans all season, finishing with a 56-5 record and earned himself another trip to the state meet at 130 pounds. Molloy was the Titans only state meet placer and he finished fifth, recording a first-round pinfall and a major decision. To get to the state meet, Molloy recorded a first place finish at regionals with 13-0 and 13-1 major decisions and a 5-4 decision. Earlier in the season, Molloy was DRL champion, individual district champion and team district champion where he recorded pins in the semis and finals.



Ameer Munassar, Melvin

Dale

The freshman had quite a year for Melvindale and went undefeated in team districts to help lead the Cards to their first ever district wrestling crown. At regionals, he placed second after 15-8 and 6-3 decision wins to secure a trip to the state meet. There, Munassar won a 5-1 decision.



Jake Mydloski Carlson

Mydloski was a 171 pound senior who qualified for the second consecutive year for the Marauders and finished the season with a 16-10 record. He played first at the Garden City Tournament and fourth at districts. He then recorded a fourth place finish at the individual regional meet and had a 5-1 decision victory on the day, sending him to the state meet. Mydloski missed most of the year due to an injury but finished his final weeks strong and recorded a 104 wins in his career.



Dean Noffsinger, Trenton

At 135, Noffsinger went to the state individual meet with the strong Trojans team after a fourth place finish at individual regionals and a 13-5 major decision there. Earlier in the season, the senior finished third at the Downriver League meet and recorded a pin in team districts. Noffsinger is a four-year starter with the Trojans.



Logan Parks, Anderson

At 145 pounds, Parks helped lead the Titans in their successful season. He finished the season a DRL champion and won by pins in the semis and finals of team districts. In individual districts, he finished second place. After an 8-3 decision victory, Parks finished third at individual regionals to earn himself a state ticket where he recorded a fall 3:36 into a match. The sophomore finished with a 50-10 season.



Vince Pizzo, Roosevelt

The heavyweight senior had a successful season with the Bears. Pizzo was an individual district champion and won team districts with a pin. At regionals the senior recorded a fall and place fourth to secure a trip to the state meet. At the state meet Pizzo finished with a 3-1 overtime decision victory. Overall, Pizzo had a 41-8 record.



Nick Phelps, Huron

Phelps was one of five Huron League champs for the Chiefs and took first at the league meet at 130 pounds.



Logan Ritchie, Huron

Only a sophomore, Ritchie repeated as league, district and regional champion. He posted a 52-2 record on the season and finished sixth at 160 pounds in the Division 2 state finals.



Matt Rossi, Riverview

Rossi was the Huron League champion at 160 pounds and a district champ at 152.



Quentin Santiago, Roosevelt

At 135 pounds, Santiago rounded out the Downriver state meet placers with his eighth place finish. He won his opening bought by a decision and recorded another decision on the day. To get to the state meet, Santiago finished second at individual regionals with 5-3 and 6-0 decisions. Earlier in the season the junior finished second and individual districts and won team districts with a decision. Santiago finished with a 43-6 overall record.



Raven Schmitt, Anderson

A regional qualifier last year, Schmitt had another successful season finishing with a 39-11 record. At 119 pounds, he finished second at the DRL meet as well as individual districts. In team districts Schmitt finished first with a technical fall in the first round and a pin in the finals. At regionals he finished third recording a technical fall and 10-4 decision and earned himself a trip to the state meet.



Sean Spear, Allen Park

Speer led the way for his Jaguars this season and had quite a few accomplishments. At 119, Speer recorded a fall at individual regionals where he finished third. In the state meet he had a forfeit victory. Earlier in the season, the senior was a double match winner at team districts and a champion at the Downriver League meet as well as a champion at individual districts. Speers finished the season with a 41-5 record.



Tom Stackpole, Trenton

Stackpole had quite a year with Trenton and was one of the only local wrestlers to place at the state meet. The heavyweight senior finished seventh at states after a pin and two decision wins. En route to the state meet, Stackpole was champion at regionals with falls in the quarter and semi finals before a decision victory in the finals. In team districts, the senior outlasted Huron in a 4-1 decision to help his team snatch the district victory away from the undefeated Chiefs. Stackpole was also a champion at the DRL meet.



Mickey Sutton, Woodhaven

At 160 pounds, Sutton finished fourth at regionals recorded a fall to secure his first trip to the state meet. There, he had a win over an injured wrestler. Earlier in the season, Sutton was champion at the DRL meet and district champion, winning a 10-8 decision over a state ranked opponent. Sutton finished the year with a 38-12 record.



Zach Underwood, Carlson

At 215 the junior secured a trip to the state meet with a fourth place finish at individual regionals where he recorded an 11-1 decision on the day. He also placed fourth at the Sheriff’s Tournament and third at districts. At the Summit Academy tournament he went 5-0 on the day and was a champion at the DRL tournament. Underwood finished the season with a 39-13 and led the team with 39 wins and 21 pins on the season.



John Wellman, Huron

At 112 pounds, the sophomore earned league and district titles before finishing second at regionals to earn a trip to the Division 2 state finals.
