TRACK AND FIELD: Richard boys have best turnout in recent years

Gabriel Richard’s boys’ track team had its best turnout in recent years and a number of strong returners could lead to a solid season for the Pioneers.

Four-year runner Leo VanDeneede returns to lead the Richard distance group that will also feature juniors Dylan Gracia and Patrick Ryan.

Michael Schigelone will be a key contributor in sprints, relays and the long jump and Anthony Dedo will handle throwing duties for the Pioneers.

Other returning juniors include Jim Lyons in both hurdle events, Nathan Mohr in sprints and the longs jump and Zach Stempien in the high jump and 1,600.

Sophomore Justin Elsesser will lead the 400 and 1,600-meter relay and returning sophomores Jack Randles, Michael Look and Joe Gajda will compete in middle distance and long distance events.

David Ritchie will also run for the Pioneers and will pace the sprint crew in the 100 and 200 as well as the two spring relays.

Other new sprinters include juniors Christian Gonzalez and Tyler Blaszcsak and freshmen Donovan Wheeler and Luke Giermann.

The league season will open for the Pioneers at home on April 17 against Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard and Notre Dame Prep.
