Roosevelt will not be the only fast group on the track in Wyandotte this year as the Bears have been selected to host a prestigious meet that will draw some of the state’s best to the Downriver area.
After an in-depth application process, the Michigan Interscholastic Track Coaches Association (MITCA) Division 1 Team State Championships, which perennially features some of Michigan’s fastest schools, will be held at Roosevelt High School on May 25th.
“This is the first time in quite some time that any of the divisions have been on the Southeast side of the state,” Roosevelt Coach Dave Lustig said. “When you think about all the Division 1 schools in the southeast side, the fact that we were selected is an honor and makes us want to do things right.”
Lustig submitted an application to host the meet in November that included photos and descriptions of why the meet should be held in Wyandotte.
The selection process is thorough and the fact that Roosevelt only has one pole vault runway was one of the potential drawbacks.
“It was said that we probably wouldn’t be a good host because we don’t have multiple pole vault runways,” Lustig said. “For a while, it didn’t look like we were going to get it.
“Then in January, we got an email saying that we were going to host. I was excited for about five minutes, then excitement and stress crept in to make sure we could get this meet on.”
Roosevelt has already begun to adapt in preparation for the meet as the Bears will feature a collegiate-style runway for pole vault paid for by fundraisers.
Lustig is looking to utilize the Wyandotte and Downriver communities to properly represent the area on such a grand stage.
“We’re trying to form some specific committees so that we can do things the right way,” Lustig said. “It’s a lot of work. This might be our first year and this may be the only year we get selected to do it, but when these kids and parents show up, I want them to feel like we’ve been doing this for years.”
This is also an opportunity for Downriver runners to perform at a high level in front of their fans without having to drive across the state.
“The more local tracksters we have there, the better it will be, too,” Lustig said. “The parents are all on board and they’re excited about it.
“We’re looking forward to showcasing our city, our track facility and our school. The more, the better in terms of who we have helping.”
