Two-time defending News-Herald Invitational champion Grosse Ile gets ready for another strong season with a slew of returning starters with state finals experience.
The Red Devils return their entire starting doubles lineup as well as league and regional champion Mary Kate McShane at singles.
Grosse Ile’s No. 1 doubles team of sophomores Brianna Riley and Julia Formentin return and each player may be looking for spots in the singles lineup.
Other returning doubles players from last year include seniors Alex Carney and Nicole Desjardins, juniors Anna Kaiser, Missy Coolsaet and Katherine Kuzmiak and sophomore Luna Terauchi.
Freshmen Olah Latala and Casey Guthrie will also be vying for starting spots this season.
Longtime Coach John Shade looks forward to another stellar season thanks to the work his team has put in during the offseason.
“I expect a good season,” Shade said. “The only person who didn’t play leading up to the season was Alex Carney, who was on the basketball team. The kids have done the job in the offseason.
The Red Devils open the season at home on April 10 against Grosse Pointe North and will travel to defending Division 4 state champion Birmingham Sacred Heart two days later.
Riverview
Riverview will feature a roster loaded with experience as the Bucs brought back 23 players with at least JV experience, including nine from last year’s varsity team.
The Bucs return three singles starters from a year ago as last season’s No. 1 Ami Shukla, No. 2 Erica Magnuson and No. 4 Shaon Islam grace the courts in Riverview once again.
Returning seniors Alexis Cole, Sarah Klavon, Tatiana Dowdy and Erin Usher all played doubles last year and will be looking for starting spots in this year’s lineup.
The Bucs have a number of players from last year’s JV team including seniors Morgan Conley and Kaylee Masserant and juniors Nour Almallouhi, Sarah Chauhdry and Kira O’Bren.
The Bucs open their season at home against Roosevelt next Wednesday.
