After posting a solid 10-6-4 record a year ago, the senior-laden Huron Chiefs return nine starters from last year and should be a player in the competitive Huron League this season.
“We have quite a few players with varsity experience,” Huron Coach Dan Rossow said. “We have four four-year starters and two three-year starters back for their senior seasons.”
Kelsey Wolcott and Kandra Hutchison, who combined for 34 goals last season, return to Huron’s front line and will lead the Chiefs offense.
Midfielders Kali Williams and Lindsey Umin – both four-year starters – will anchor the center while Brinley Chirillo and Abigail Perecki solidify the defense.
Senior Lissa Kowalewski is back between the pipes for the fourth straight season for the Chiefs.
“We are very excited for the season to start and look to improve on last year’s campaign,” Rossow said. “The Huron League has become very competitive in recent years and we will have to stay focused every game this season.
“We have a very balanced squad this season with depth at almost all positions. I am really excited to see what we are capable of.”
The Chiefs will open the season on Tuesday at Downriver League power Woodhaven and will host Bedford the next day.
Riverview
With a large squad of 22 players, Coach Pete Cano and the Riverview Pirates will lean heavily on three senior captains to steer the Bucs through the Huron League this spring.
Alexis Cano, who led the team in scoring last year, returns at forward for the Bucs while fellow captains Amber Ostrowski (midfield) and Haley Schaafsma (forward) help provide leadership.
“We expect big things out of those three,” Cano said. “We go as they go, basically.”
Junior Kirsten Chambers, who led the team in assists last season, returns to the midfield with seniors Mackenzie Cyster and Hailey Rooney.
Seniors Maggie Heit and Arianna Kissel will see plenty of time on the backline for the Bucs as will sophomore Chelsey Warlick.
Sophomore keeper Miranda Cobbs will be the last line of defense and sophomores Emma Lilje and Amber Potter will see time at midfield.
Players looking for minutes at midfield and forward will include seniors Diana Gonzalez and Alice Mercer, sophomores Sabrina Bronni and Alexis Slayton and freshmen Kristina Nunez and Alyssa Uselton.
Rotating in on defense will be junior Alli Schook, sophomore Monica Justice and freshman Sydney Garner.
“We’re young, but we have a nice mixture of seniors and juniors and sophomores,” Cano said. “We played indoors in the winter and we looked pretty good, so we’ll see.”
The Bucs will travel to Woodhaven on Wednesday in a non-league opener.
Flat Rock
Flat Rock had a young, sophomore-laden team last season and will return a number of those players with another year of experience under their belts.
“We were young last year and I have most of my team back,” Flat Rock Coach Mike Wagner said. “We have a couple new, young players who seem pretty skilled and we’re just trying to put all the pieces together right now.”
Senior midfielder Morgan Schalm will lead the scoring attack, senior Jessica Anderson will anchor the defense and junior Nikki Woodman will return between the pipes to round out Flat Rock’s trio of key returners.
Juniors Olivia Lawson and Sarah Wrase will complete the midfield line on the outside positions and will look to provide some scoring punch this season.
“We’re going to be pretty reliant on our defense,” Wagner said. “Our forwards are pretty young, so we’re going to rely on our defense to do the work for us this year until we can figure out everything else.”
The Rams will open the season against Summit Academy on Tuesday.
