Not only is it the final season for Trenton’s seven seniors, but it’s the last run for Coach Richard Morrow as well and the team wants to spend as much time together as possible.

The Trojans got a chance to further their season and will have at least one more game together after their 64-42 victory over Adrian in the Class B regional semifinals at Flat Rock Monday night.

The Maples started strong and put in a few quick triples and the teams saw a handful of lead changes, but with 2:26 left to play in the opening quarter, Jason Zahran tied the game and the Trojans never looked back.

Zahran and Jerry LaBell a few three-point shots and Trenton led 17-9 after eight minutes.

“Sometimes it takes us a little bit of time to adjust with their offense and cuts and things,” Morrow said. “But once we adjust to things, we usually do pretty well.”

Trenton held Adrian scoreless for almost half of the second quarter and only allowed the Maples three field goals during the quarter and took a 32-18 advantage into the half.

Free throws and triples were all the rage in the third quarter for the Trojans as LaBell added two more three balls and Zahran and Dan Mercure shot a combined 100 percent from the free throw line to help the Trojans to a 48-28 lead after three.

The Maples responded with a strong fourth quarter and scored 14 points, but the Trojans shot 6-for-8 from the charity stripe and added 16 total points of their own to secure the win and a trip to the regional finals.

“I thought we played pretty well tonight,” Morrow said. “I think our game plan was there. We knew what they did (and) I think we executed well.

“Once again we’re a fundamental team and we just do what we’re supposed to do. We try to stay within ourselves and try not to be somebody we’re not.”

It was a team effort for the Trojans, who saw six players contribute to the offensive effort. The team also had four players with point totals higher than Adrian’s top scorer.

Zahran led all scorers with 20 points to go with his five rebounds. Dan Hall recorded a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds.

“Danny Hall just dominated the boards,” Morrow said.

LaBell finished the night with 13 points, including four triples and Mercure had 12 points and six rebounds.

Brett Bartels led the Maples with 10 points and five rebounds.

Morrow was pleased with his team’s effort in their win and is excited about a trip to the regional finals; something the team has not won since 1944.

The task won’t be easy and the Trojans will be the underdogs when they go against the Detroit Community Hurricanes.

Morrow says it is virgin territory for the team but says it is fun being where they are and the Trojans are enjoying it.

“They’re excited,” Morrow said. “What you need to upset a team is you’ve gotta come in with confidence (and) I think we’re there. We’re underdogs so who knows. We’ll see what we can do.”

The Trojans play again on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Flat Rock.
