SWIMMING: Riverview takes second at SMISL Championships

Riverview, Woodhaven and Cabrini wrapped up their regular seasons last Saturday at the SMISL Swimming & Diving Championships at Eastern Michigan University.

Powerful Detroit Country Day took first with 408.5 points followed by Riverview (350.5) and Woodhaven (183).

Erie Mason finished fourth followed by Cabrini, Dundee and Lincoln.

“It was a great day for our program,” said Riverview Coach Sean Kelly, who was named SMISL Coach of the Year. “We achieved over 100 personal-best times which was the result of a lot of hard work from the boys.”

The Bucs gave state-ranked Country Day a run for its money throughout the meet and actually led the Yellowjackets with only three events remaining.

Riverview’s Ryan Pickell turned in a league championship swim in the 100-free and the Bucs also got a first-place finish in the 200 medley relay (Alex Guthrie, Dakota Roehler, Nicolas Guthrie, Nick Diroff).

Other top Riverview finishes included Roehler in the 200-free (second), Nicolas Guthrie in the butterfly (second) and Nolan Rochon in the 500-free (third).

The Bucs performed well in all three relays with a second-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay (Pickell, Alex Guthrie, Diroff, Nicolas Guthrie) and third in the 400 freestyle relay (Roehler, Morgen Gardocki, Rochon, Jacob Hosier).

Woodhaven’s David Erickson was named SMISL Swimmer of the Year and was a double-winner in the 200-free and the butterfly.

The senior was also on the Warriors’ 400 freestyle relay team with Alex Rodriguez, Wesley Moilanen and Zach Holt, which finished second.

Holt finished second in the 100-free, Damien Straub was runner-up in the backstroke and the Warriors finished third in the 200 medley relay (Straub, Holt, Rodriguez, Moilanen).

Cabrini’s Erik LaCroix was the top Monarch finisher with a second-place score in diving.

Connor McAfee finished fourth in the 200-free and fifth in the 500-free, Ford Pariseau took fifth in the breaststroke and the 200 medley relay team of Kirk Nicola, Pariseau, Jacob Burke and Robert Day finished sixth.
