The last time the Trenton boys’ basketball team won a regional final, it was 1944.
Fast forward almost 70 years, and the Trojans have placed themselves in the regional run after a 64-52 victory over Allen Park Cabrini in the MHSAA Class B district championship game.
“They’re more than happy right now,” Trenton Coach Richard Morrow said after Friday night’s win. “We lost last year’s championship game by one point to Carlson. This was our time.”
The game got off to a fast start and exploded with triples; three from Cabrini and one from Trenton and the Trojans found themselves down 13-9 after the first quarter.
Morrow was never worried about being down.
“We don’t get too panicked early in the game, especially if we’re down five or six points,” he said. “We can make that up real quick.
“Our team is really disciplined and they’re fundamental. In the course of a game, that pays off in the long run.”
And make it up quick they did.
Dan Hall led the Trojans in the second quarter as they outscored the Monarchs 22-9 for a 31-22 advantage at the half.
Hall finished the quarter with 12 points and went four-for-seven from the foul line.
The Monarchs responded well and outscored Trenton 14-12 in the third quarter, but a free-throw filled fourth quarter gave the Trojans the upper hand.
In the final quarter, Trenton went 11-for-15 from the foul line, while the Monarchs finished seven-for-9.
Andrew Smith led the Monarchs in the quarter with 10 points and went six-for-seven from the free throw line.
Trenton’s Jeremy Horst went four-for-four in the fourth quarter and Jason Zahran finished five-for-six.
Hall and Zahran led all scorers with 23 points each, which Morrow thought was fitting for the seniors.
Each recorded a double-double on the night as well and Zahran had 10 rebounds while Hall finished with 12.
Dan Mercure finished the night with eight points and six rebounds, Horst recorded six points and four rebounds and Jerry LaBell had two points.
The Monarchs were led by Smith with 18 points and seven rebounds.
Michael Ball recorded a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds.
Sean David finished the night with nine points and two rebounds, David Szczesny had seven points and three rebounds and Jared Hicks had two points.
Despite the loss, Cabrini Coach Mark Shea was pleased with his team’s effort.
“I thought we came out and I thought we played hard right from the beginning,” Shea said. “I was exceptionally pleased with this run.
“Nobody gave us half a shot here. We weren’t even in the discussion. I think we’re in the discussion now.”
In the end, Shea thought Trenton’s size was just too much.
“We played hard, we just weren’t big enough,” Shea said. “We just physically couldn’t match up with their two bigs inside and that created issues for us.”
The district final was the farthest Cabrini has gone in a season in the Class B division.
The Monarchs are losing seven seniors this year but Shea says he is comfortable with the talent coming in.
“I’ve got a solid foundation coming back,” he said. “I’m gonna lose some quality kids, but the program’s in good shape.”
Morrow and his team are thrilled with a trip to regionals.
Four years ago, the same team was 1-20 and Morrow said the kids have worked hard to turn things around and finished this season 10-3 in the league and 17-5 overall.
“We’ve gone through a lot,” Morrow said. “We stuck to it and stayed with each other.”
Morrow is especially pleased his team will continue their season into regional play because not only is it the last run for his seven seniors, it is Morrow’s last season as well.
The Coach doesn’t seem worried about regional competition.
“I believe our league has set us up for regional play,” Morrow said. “The league’s been tough. We lost our league games by less than 10 points.
“I’m hoping we surprise some people. I’ve got a really good class of kids. They don’t make mistakes and they’re very smart.”
The Trojans face the winner of the Adrian-Tecumseh game at 5:30 on Monday.
