Days after three-peating as district champions, the Allen Park Inter-City girls’ basketball team secured themselves a trip to the regional finals.
The Chargers defeated Ann Arbor Rudolf Steiner 45-25 to secure their spot.
Inter-City struggled with points at the beginning of the game but junior Courtney Hunter came up with two big layups and the Chargers led 7-4 after the first quarter.
The team held their opponents to just six points in the second quarter and added 12 themselves for a 19-10 advantage at the half.
Inter-City outscored Steiner 26-15 to secure their victory.
Coach Josh Hubbard was pleased with his team’s pressure and they way they handled the pressure from Steiner.
“I thought our pressure was an advantage for us as we were able to force them into turnovers that led to fast break opportunities for us,” Hubbard said. “On the flip side, I thought we did a decent job of handling their pressure and getting shots off their press.”
Hubbard was also pleased to see scoring coming from many different players at key times throughout the contest.
The Chargers were led by senior point guard Rachel Muscat with 16 points.
Junior Alyssa Saenz finished the night with seven, freshman Karalynn Goering had six points, junior Arie Sandoval finished with five points and Hunter had four.
“We were able to spread the scoring load out between a lot of people,” Hubbard said.
Goering came out and scored four of her six points midway through the third, allowing the team to extend their lead and Sandoval scored in the fourth to help put the game away.
The Chargers advance to face Plymouth Christian in the regional finals on Thursday at 7 pm. The game will be at Huron Valley Lutheran in Westland.
