COMPETITIVE CHEERLEADING: Third times a charm for state champ Carlson (PHOTO)

The Carlson cheerleading dynasty continued on Saturday after the Marauders secured their third-straight Division 2 state title and their fifth state championship in the last six years.

A week ago, the Dearborn Divine Child cheerleading team upset two-time defending state champion Carlson with win a Division 2 regional title.

Saturday morning the Marauders returned the favor, beating second-place Divine Child by 10 points and winning their third straight state championship and fifth in the last six years.

“It was an amazing win Saturday,” said Coach Danielle Jokela. “Three state championships in a row is a dream come true.

“I have amazing seniors and also an amazing team.”

The Marauders, who are Miranda Colmer, Annie Hajec, Kaitlin Gant, Emily Tritt, Sydney Alioto, Maelyn Russo, Chelsea Robb, Sarah Tritt, Alexis Kopchia, Malory DeLeon, Kiah Manthei, Kristina Arrendale, Kortney Tyra, Kayla Chernoff, Kerra Janis, Dana Hammill, Kersten Gant, Sheridan Skopczynski, Madison Campbell, Chaylana Shulaw, Mary Miller, Rhiannon Morbito, Thalia Hamilton and Macey Sirls, were second after the opening round, but they killed in the second and third rounds and won going away.

St. Joseph, which held a fractional lead over Carlson after the first rotation, faded to seventh place and finished ahead of only Roosevelt.

Divine Child pulled into second place after the second round, but the Marauders beat them by nearly four points in that round and four more in the final turn.

With the championship, the Marauders team has now won titles in 2008, 2009, 2011, 2012 and 2013.

In 2010, Allen Park finished first and Carlson was second. This year, Allen Park placed fourth behind Carlson, Divine Child and Mt. Pleasant.

Jokela said much of her program’s success is linked directly to her assistant coaches Tam Christiansen and Marissa Mousouleas and the varsity feeder teams.

“I am so lucky to have Tam and Marissa by my side and our great middle school and jay-vee programs.” She said.

In Division 3, Richmond built a big lead and then survived a less-than-stellar final rotation to beat Pontiac Notre Dame Prep 768.64-765.85.

Grosse Ile was right with the top two teams through the first two rounds, but a 301.7 score in the final round forced the Red Devils to settle for third place.
