BOYS' BASKETBALL: Roundup

Downriver teams got in their final tune-ups before districts last week as the regular season came to a close for local teams last week.

Downriver League champion Truman heads into the postseason this week after splitting a pair of games against Kennedy and Harper Woods Chandler Park Academy.

On Tuesday, the Cougars traveled to Kennedy and defeated in-city rival Kennedy 76-46.

Aaron Foster-Smith led Truman with 22 points and Robert Whitehorn added 12 points eight rebounds and eight assists.

Anthony Wartley-Fritz (11 points) and Devain Newbill (10 points) also reached double-figures in the victory.

Andia Marsh and Kareth O’Neal each scored 15 for Kennedy.

On Thursday, the Cougars traveled to Chandler Park Academy and fell 81-73.

Foster-Smith was stellar in defeat with 37 points and 11 rebounds.

Newbill had 12 points, Devin Goodwell had six points and 14 rebounds and Wartley-Fritz added seven points and 10 boards.

Also on Thursday, Kennedy ended the regular season at home with a 62-56 victory over Dearborn.

Matt Woloszyk led the Eagles with 18 points and Marsh added 17.



Trenton wins two

Trenton closed out its regular season schedule with a pair of wins over Huron League opponents.

On Tuesday, the Trojans defeated Monroe Jefferson 74-56.

Jason Zahran led the Trojans with 21 points. Dan Hall had 17 points and nine rebounds and Jerry LaBell added 12.

On Thursday, Trenton ended the season with a 51-46 win over Grosse Ile.

Zahran scored 19 in the win while Christian Mercure chipped in 10.

Will Sassack led the Red Devils with 16 points.



Anderson goes 2-0

The Anderson Titans entered districts with some momentum after a pair of wins over Garden City and Redford Union last week.

On Tuesday, the Titans defeated Garden City 40-37.

Dejon Matthews led Anderson with nine points.

On Thursday, Anderson earned another close victory with a 51-45 win over Redford Union.

Connor Phee paced Anderson with 13 points and Shane Freitag added 12.



Bears best Garden City

Roosevelt’s regular season came to an end with a 14-6 record after the Bears defeated Garden City 74-47.

Divon Robinson led the Bears with 17 points and Devan Stewart scored 16.



AP falls

Allen Park lost its final game of the season with a 59-44 defeat at the hands of Dearborn Heights Annapolis.

Richie Slate led the Jags with 11 points while Antonio Reviere and Richard Gamble each scored seven.



Cards drop two

Melvindale played a pair of makeup games last week and dropped their final two league games of the season to Lincoln Park and Carlson.

On Tuesday, the Cardinals fell to the Railsplitters 61-39.

Two days later, Melvindale traveled to Carlson and fell to the Marauders 44-41.

Daton Aaron led Carlson with 14 points while Malik Boynton was the top scorer for Melvindale with 16.



Warriors lose

Woodhaven dropped to 4-16 on the season with a regular season-ending loss at Redford Thurston last Tuesday.

Alex Gordon led the Warriors with 12 points, Rashod Johnson scored eight and Donnie Stoddard had seven points and seven rebounds.



Chiefs ground T-birds

Huron defeated hosted Edsel Ford in its regular season finale and defeated the T-birds 73-64.

Bill Ames led the Chiefs with 24 points and senior Karan Ghuman added 13 in the victory.



Bucs win fourth game

Riverview snapped a three-game losing streak and earned its fourth win of the season with a 64-45 victory over Jalen Rose Leadership Academy.

Khalil Neal paced the Bucs with 16 points. Max Mousouleas had 15 and Greg Burris scored 13 in the win.



I-C wins

Inter-City’s regular season ended on Thursday with a 66-55 victory over Detroit Westside Academy.

Evan Kraatz (21 points, nine assists) and Nathanael Packwood (20 points, nine rebounds) just missed out on double-doubles and Luke Barber scored 17 in the victory.



Cabrini tops Chavez

Cabrini headed into districts on a winning note with a 71-55 win over Detroit Cesar Chavez Academy on Friday.

David Szczesny led the Monarchs with 15 points, Ian Wagner added 13 and Andrew Smith recorded a double-double with 12 points and 15 rebounds.



BP goes 2-1



Baptist Park played three games in three days last week and posted a 2-1 record to close out its regular season.

On Thursday, the Wildcats defeated Washtenaw Christian 62-46.

Anthony Kaminski had 15 points and eight rebounds, Javon Shell scored 11 and Kirk Thomas and Devante Schofield each had 10 points in the win.

On Friday, Baptist Park defeated Macomb Christian 67-42.

Kaminski had a double-double (17 points, 11 rebounds) and the trio of Thomas, Shell and Daniel Eubank each scored 10 points.

On Saturday, the Wildcats wrapped up the regular season with a 57-44 loss to Gabriel Richard.

Richard’s Colton Jarratt led all scorers with 16 points. Danny Baum and Tyler Blaszack joined him in double-figures with 10 apiece.

Thomas led Baptist Park with 15 points and Kaminski added 10 in the defeat.
