BOYS' BASKETBALL: Truman no match for second-ranked Romulus

Wow, so that’s what the No. 2-ranked team in Michigan’s highest high school class looks like.

After Monday night, the Truman Cougars would hate to run into No. 1.

Truman, the Downriver League champion, went to Romulus Monday night to play the host and second-ranked Eagles in a first-round district game and the result was not pretty.

The Eagles were unstoppable from beginning to end and they beat the Cougars 90-48, coasting by game’s end.

The Eagles limited the Cougars to eight first-quarter points and led 23-8 at the first intermission. There was no let up in the second quarter and as late as the final two minutes of the half, Romulus still had Truman nearly tripled up with a score of 38-13.

It was 50-20 at halftime and 77-38 after three.

Romulus used 13 players in the game and 11 of them scored. Six of them had at least one three-point basket.

Elbert Mathews, who at one point in the second quarter hit three-point shots on three straight Romulus possessions, led the Eagles with 21 points. Jalon Plummer was next with 15.

Aaron Foster-Smith, who is Downriver’s leading scorer with a 22-point per game average, was held eight points, although his second-half dunk was one of Truman’s few highlights.

Devain Newbill had a third of Truman’s points and was the team leader with 16.

With the win, Romulus moves on to face Belleville in Wednesday’s regional semifinal round.
