It was a tale of two halves in Monday’s first-round Class B district game featuring Allen Park Cabrini and Grosse Ile at Summit Academy.
The Red Devils led until halfway through the third quarter when Cabrini’s David Szczesny gave the Monarchs a lead and they never looked back, defeating Grosse Ile 65-59.
Things started especially slowly for Cabrini and the Monarchs found themselves down 12-5 with just three minutes gone by.
“We were playing tentative in the first quarter and we just didn’t come out with any intensity,” Cabrini Coach Mark Shea said. “We were playing on the perimeter the whole time.
“I think probably two minutes into the second (quarter) it started to change. I think from that point on we were probably the most aggressive team until the last two minutes.”
The momentum did shift and the Monarchs battled back and were only down 26-23 at the half.
After Cabrini took a lead in the third quarter, the Red Devils continued to battle but found themselves down 40-31 after the Monarchs outscored them 17-5 in the quarter.
In the fourth quarter, it was a free-throw shooting contest and the Monarchs stepped up and shot 12-for-16, while the Devils shot 6-for-11.
“When they beat us the first time, we got 27 percent from the line,” Shea said. “(Tonight) my good foul shooters ended up with the ball.”
Grosse Ile Coach Bryan Friel was disappointed, but said his team had to foul.
“I knew they were a good free-throw shooting team,” Friel said. “There was nothing we could do; we had to foul to stop the clock.”
The Monarchs were led by Sean David, who led all scorers with 19 points. He also brought down four rebounds.
“We call him the professor because he’s so smart,” Shea said. “He’s 5-foot-7, but he plays the game. He’ll take it against anybody.”
Andrew Smith finished the night with a double-double of 16 points and 14 rebounds.
“He averages a double-double,” Shea said. “He does an incredible amount of work.”
Szczesny finished the night with 11 points and seven rebounds.
Grosse Ile was led by Daniel McCarty with 16 points and five rebounds. Keeton Ross and Tyler London each finished with 12 points and Ross recorded a double-double with 12 rebounds to go with his points.
“We played a poor game,” Friel said. “Defensively, offensively, we just didn’t play well.
“When you don’t play well you lose. We expected to move on tonight. We had beaten them early in the season by 10 and tonight we just didn’t play well.”
Shea on the other hand, was pleased with the win in the tough district.
“I thought we played pretty well,” he said. “I thought it was a good spirited game.
“Both teams played hard and I thought it was pretty indicative of this district. I think Trenton right now is probably the team to beat.”
With the win, the Monarchs advance to play host Summit Academy on Wednesday and Shea knows it won’t be an easy task playing the host team.
“I expect a real athletic team,” he said. “Playing on their home floor, there’s gonna be a big crowd here.
“I’m hoping the guys got this one under their belt and know what kind of intensity to bring.”
Trenton beats FR
In the early game, Trenton defeated Flat Rock 67-43.
The game turned out to be the Jason Zahran Show and the senior topped the scorebook with 35 points and also brought down seven rebounds.
“He’s a good player and he’s just excited right now,” Trenton Coach Richard Morrow said after the win. “I think he led us in about every aspect of the game tonight.
“If you’ve got a hot hand, you go with it.”
Flat Rock took the first lead of the game, but the Trojans quickly took over and led 20-9 after the first quarter.
Zahran and Dan Hall led Trenton in the first eight minutes, accounting for all of the scoring.
The Rams continued fighting in the second quarter and went 6-for-6 from the foul line and added a triple, but still trailed 36-26 at the half.
Throughout the first half, Flat Rock got within 10 points several times, but just could not get over the hump.
Morrow said his team was getting ahead of themselves and let the Rams start to close the gap several times.
“What was happening was we were trying to force things and we didn’t have to,” Morrow said. “We’d get up 14, 16 points and then all of the sudden we want to try to start doing things that we don’t normally do.
“That’s what happens with high school games. They get a lead and they think okay we’re indestructible and start trying to be somebody we’re not.”
The third quarter sealed the game when the Trojans drained four triples outscored their opponent 24-3 for a 60-29 advantage after three.
The Rams turned around and outscored Trenton 14-7 in the final quarter but could not close the gap any further and saw their season end.
Flat Rock was led by Michael Chickeral with 16 points and two rebounds. Colin Knoch finished the night with five points and five rebounds and Michael Blosser and Mitchell Mayberry had four points each.
“We worked our game plan like we thought,” Morrow said. “Our job was to stop number 14 (Chikeral) and I thought we did a pretty good job at that.
“Our scouting report was dead on and we did what we had to do.”
Zahran led the Trojans with his 35 points and finished the night with five triples.
Terry Wright recorded nine points and five rebounds, Hall had eight points and seven rebounds and Bill Ames finished with seven points.
With the win the Trojans advance to play Huron in Wednesday’s semifinals.
“It’s gonna be a good game,” Morrow said. “We played them earlier their year and beat them by eight or nine.
“They’re a good team and they’ve got a couple of good players too and we’re just gonna have to shut them down.”
