The Truman girls’ basketball team took its chances letting sixth-ranked Westland John Glenn shoot from the outside in Friday’s Class A district title game.
Bad idea.
The Rockets’ Raven Bankston made four triples in the first quarter and finished with 20 points to lead Glenn to a 73-29 victory.
The Rockets (21-1) head to Saline on Tuesday to meet Dearborn Heights Crestwood in a regional semifinal.
“They’ve got a lot of speed, so we hoped to slow their transition tonight and make them beat from the outside,” Truman Coach Chad Putnam said. “They made some shots early and took us out of that.”
The Cougars (13-10) made the game’s first two baskets but lost the lead for good when Glenn answered with a 10-0 run.
Bankston’s triple just before the first-quarter buzzer gave the Rockets a 25-15 lead and it grew to 40-19 by intermission.
Thirty-four Truman turnovers only helped Glenn.
“That’s the best team we’ve faced all year and that’s a much higher level of defense than we’re used to seeing,” Putnam said of the Rockets, who upset Inkster on Wednesday and will send four starters to Division 1 NCAA programs this fall.
Junior April Micheaux had 12 points and 12 rebounds for Truman, which also got eight points from fellow junior Judah Frazier.
Kaira Barnes and Kayla Horn each had 10 points for Glenn. Kierra Jordan added nine.
