GIRLS' BASKETBALL: Jags fall to streaking Crestwood in district final (PHOTO)

Crestwood proved to be too much for Allen Park on Friday as the Chargers secured their 18th consecutive win and a district championship with a 48-39 victory over the Jags in a Class B district final.

The Crestwood girls’ basketball team won its 18th game in a row Friday. This time, the victory was for the district championship. The Chargers beat Allen Park 48-39 for the Division 2 crown.

The game started as planned for Crestwood. Senior star Oreyanna Curry hit a three-pointer shot seconds into the game. The shot set the tone for Curry to take control of the game. She finished with 23 points, leading all scorers.

“She’s our leader and runs the floor very well,” said first-year Crestwood Coach Bill Bright.

Also contributing to the championship was junior Danielle Clarke. She scored 13 points, including three shots from beyond the arc. She also dominated inside with seven rebounds and two big hook-shots.

“On defense, she plugs up the middle and on offense we like to spread her around so she can knock down her threes,” said Bright.

Crestwood got off to a fast start, leading 14-6 after the first quarter. However, Allen Park was able to get back in the game. At the half, the Jaguars were only down one.

Solid defense and timely scoring got Allen Park back into the game. The Jags held the Chargers to just five points in the second quarter. Junior Hailey Lazarek was able to contain the Crestwood guards during the period. She also scored 13 points in the game.

Also leading the way for Allen Park was Casey Bowdell. She ran the floor for the Jaguars during their comeback and scored 12 points in the meantime.

“They both had good games and I am very proud of how hard they fought,” said Allen Park Coach Chuck Perez.

After half time, Crestwood was able to get back on track and the Chargers never looked back. Curry sealed the deal by going 4-for-5 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter.

“I couldn’t be more proud of these girls,” said Bright.

Crestwood will now face a strong Westland John Glenn in the regional semifinal Tuesday at Saline.

“They are ranked very high in the state so it will be a tough game,” said Bright. “But these girls have surprised me before.”
