For the third time in three years, the Inter-City girls’ basketball team will be heading to regionals after winning the Class D district championship by defeating the Lutheran Westland Warriors 43-33 Friday night in Allen Park.

The Chargers were led by their “Big Three” players – senior guard Rachel Muscat, junior forward Alyssa Saenz and sophomore center Makayla Thoune – a group that combined for 29 of the 43 Inter-City points.

It was a well-rounded game for the Chargers as they has two players in double digits, one with nine points and four others who scored. It was exactly the game plan that Coach Josh Hubbard wanted.

In addition to the top three, Inter-City also got scoring from Alexa Krug, Sarah Davis, Ashley Harrison and Courtney Hunter.

Sophomore Julia Yancy and senior Chandler Davenport, who combined for 17 points, led the Warriors.

Fouls were abundant the whole game for both teams, as they each racked up 14 team fouls.

Each team had trouble scoring at the beginning of the game and Inter-City led 8-1 after one period.

The teams heated up after that and it was a close game until late in the third quarter. Then the Chargers started pull away.

Lutheran Westland scored 14 points in the second quarter and cut Inter-City’s lead to 19-15.

Inter-City’s defense stiffened at the end of the second and carried it the rest of the way.

“I was impressed with our defense in the second half, I thought we responded well,” said Hubbard.

Once the defense stepped up for the Chargers, they didn’t look back.

Although Westland got close several times, Inter-City never gave up the lead.

The last time Westland got close, Thoune hit a smooth three-point shot off an in-bounds play, Muscat had a steal and a lay-up and Thoune hit two free throws to push the lead back to double digits.

The Chargers now head to regionals in Bellevue where they will face Ann Arbor Rudolf Steiner at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Steiner won its district by defeating Saline Washtenaw Christian 35-22.

“We’ve been to the regional finals the past two years with this core group,” said Hubbard. “We’ll see what we can do, get a game plan and go out and play.”

The winner of Tuesday game will face the Plymouth Christian-Bellevue winner for the regional championship.
