The Riverview Gabriel Richard girls’ basketball team was declared Class C district champs Friday night after a 66-20 victory over Ecorse.
The Pioneers got off to a fast start and took a 19-6 lead at the end of the first quarter which turned into a 36-9 lead at the half.
Richard did not allow their opponent more than seven points in any of the quarters during the night.
Despite the score, Richard Coach William Jones said Ecorse was a good opponent and hoped his team did not get too confident with their recent wins and take the game for granted.
“What’s different this time of the year (is) you need kids to reinvest in the season,” he said. “Sometimes things that are a part of that routine can get lost on kids.
“If they lose perspective, things can go differently. We seem to have it going right now these past to games but part of the reason is that we scheduled our games so we’d be prepared for teams of a different caliber.”
Williams said Ecorse did challenge his team.
“They were there to play,” he said. “They were very aggressive and had a great game plan of what they wanted to do.
“We scored a lot of points, but an observer like myself saw if we don’t tighten it up, this game could turn a little bit different.”
As it got later into the game and became apparent the Pioneers were going to win, Jones challenged his team to better execute their offense and be prepared for their quick turnaround to the next game.
Richard saw 10 players contribute to the scoring effort, three of them with double digits.
Ashley Henderson led with 17 points, Casey Lyons recorded 14 points, all in the first half, and Morgan Casanova finished with 11 points, also in the first half.
The team was 100 percent from the free throw line, but only shot one during the contest.
“We had a lot of jump shots,” Jones said. “We try to make sure we challenge ourselves to get scoring three different ways; half court, points in transition, and we have to be able to score from the free throw line.
“We can’t rely on that exclusively. Tonight we had a lot of nice open shots and some nice transition stuff early.”
Jones made it a point to let his five seniors finish the last two and a half minutes on the floor together in their last physical game at Gabriel Richard.
Jones stressed to his team the importance of the next game; the only game they are guaranteed to have for the rest of the season.
“I told the girls anyone that continues to survive in the state tournament as it goes on, in each game you are expecting to get every team’s survival game.
“They’re gonna hang on for everything they can. Whatever it is, you’re gonna get that from every game from every single opponent.”
With the victory, the Pioneers will face Detroit Consortium College Prep at Bishop Foley at 5:30 on Tuesday.
