The Gabriel Richard boys’ bowling team, which won Catholic League and Division 4 regional titles this season, added the biggest prize of all Friday night – a state championship.
Bowling at the Division 4 state tournament at Sunnybrook Lanes in Sterling Heights, the Pioneers finished second overall in the qualifying round and then ripped through the quarterfinals and semifinals before swamping East Jackson 1355-1058 in the championship match.
East Jackson had the fourth-highest score in the qualifying round.
In the quarterfinals, Richard beat Ravenna in a close match, 1144-1119. In the in semifinals the Pioneers took out St. Louis 1406-1289.
Austin Kraemer, Austin Stempien, Christian O’Callaghan, Jack Berry, Zack Stempien and Zach Barr bowled for the Pioneers in the championship match.
Rogers City, which was first in qualifying with a score of 3449 – 37 pins ahead of Richard – was knocked out of the tournament in the quarterfinals by Saginaw Valley Lutheran, the eighth and final seed.
Of the other Downriver teams to qualify for the state meet, Richard was the only boys’ team to get past the qualifying level.
Among the girls’ teams, Division 3 Flat Rock finished second in its qualifying block and beat Perry in the quarterfinals before falling to Battle Creek Pennfield in the semis.
Division 2 Kennedy also qualified second, but lost in the quarterfinal round to Jackson North West.
The individual state finals are Saturday.
