BOWLING: Another 7-10, but this time it works out for Truman bowler

Truman bowling Coach Steve Vernier and his son Ryan had “a moment” during the state regional tournament that neither is likely to forget.

A year ago, Ryan – then a junior – was attempting to bowl his way into the state singles finals when he rolled a 7-10 split in the 10th frame of his last game of the singles portion of the regional tournament.

Facing a nearly impossible spare, he took out one of the pins, finished with a nine in the frame and fell just nine pins short of fell short of qualifying in the state singles finals. If he had spared, he might have qualified.

“Ryan was devastated,” Coach Vernier remembered. “He thought the world was going to end.”

Fast forward 12 months to last weekend’s Division 2 regional tournament at Taylor Lanes. Ryan – now a senior – was one of six Cougars in the hunt for singles success. Like last year, the top 10 finishers at the regional qualify for the state tournament.

In the ninth frame, Ryan hit the pocket, but again left the 7-10 split

“He said, ‘Dad, I couldn’t throw the ball any better,’” Steve Vernier said.

In the 10th frame, Ryan hit the pocket again – and again left the nearly impossible 7-10 split. With opens in each of his last two frames, he finished with a 184 and thought he might have missed his last chance.

“It was déjà vu,” the coach said. “It was another great shot and another 7-10. But he wasn’t upset at all. He said he threw the ball great. ‘That’s bowling. You either get a strike or bad breaks. I’m getting bad breaks.’
