HOCKEY: Allen Park beats Divine Child in three overtimes (PHOTO)

Three overtimes; Seventy-three minutes of hockey.

That’s how long it took to decide the champion of the pre-regional 43 in Redford on Thursday.

Allen Park and Divine Child spent over 30 minutes tied 1-1 before Allen Park’s David Pischke netted the game-winner for the Jags with just over a minute left to go in the third overtime.

Pischke, who recently returned to the team after missing a chunk of time due mono, has been making things happen since he got back.

Just a week ago, in the Jag’s last game of the regular season, Pischke recorded a hat trick against Allen Park Cabrini.

“Pischke, what can you say about Pischke,” Allen Park Coach John Brithinee said. “Since he’s come back, he’s one of the best players on the ice every day. Whoever we’re playing, he stands out.

Moments before the winning goal Brithinee and his coaching staff asked Pischke if he was OK, and the junior told him his legs were hurting.

Brithinee told him 20 seconds; just a 20-second shift.

And that was all it took for Pischke to get out there and smack Austin Schultz’s rebound in.

Earlier in the game, after a scoreless first period, traffic was created in front of the net and Allen Park’s Travis Pippin slipped one in to give the Jags the first lead of the game. Schultz and Pischke had the assists.

Divine Child put shot after shot on net at the end of the period, but goalie Jake Stoddard stepped up with some strong saves.

Almost a full period passed before the teams saw any more scoring and this time it was the Falcons who got the goal.

Senior forward Michael Perian got a shot on the rebound to tie the game at one. He was assisted by Anthony Scala and Anthony Ronchetto.

The first overtime brought several scoring chances for the Jaguars but DC’s Dominic Stankiewicz proved just how strong he is between the pipes.

“I know Stankiewicz,” Brithinee said. “Up until last year, he was on my team. And that kid’s a competitor. He’s as fierce a competitor as they are.

“That’s what I kept telling my team. Guys, it’s not going to be easy. I’m sure Brandon was telling his team that as well. It’s not going to be a pretty goal. Both goaltenders were playing too well.”

The Falcons had a big penalty kill in the second overtime after Adam Siedlaczek was called for slashing, and the defense proved strong into the third overtime.

But with 1:21 left to play, and a fourth overtime looming, Pischke netted the winner and the game was in the books.

Brithinee was more than pleased with his team’s composure.

“I think we played one of our best games today,” he said. “Fundamentally, they stayed to the plan. Discipline wise, every kid on the team just stuck to what we asked them to do.

“They weren’t trying to do anything extra. They were doing exactly what we tried to get them to do and what we taught them to do and what we’ve been working on since the Southgate game when I said we went backwards and started over at basics.”

The Jags had to overcome some adversity to earn their win in the game.

During regulation, not one, but two different players broke their skates.

In the third period, Toph Mann, who was playing every third shift broke his boot.

But Brandon Kilburg was right there, telling Mann, “I know you can fit in to mine,” and unlacing his skates.

“Think of what that kid just gave up,” Brithinee said. “He was getting some shifts on and off, but he said ‘Coach, I gotta give my skates up.’

“That’s a lot of character. That is a lot of character right there.”

As the overtimes went on, Brithinee told his team he believed they had the Falcons on the ropes and he said the Jags started to recognize when they put the pressure on, the Falcons were leaving the ice exhausted.

He didn’t say much else, but just reminded his team how exciting the game was.

“This is what you play hockey for,” he told his team.

The win was the senior’s first victory over Divine Child.

Captains Tom Snyder, Aaron Porter, Richie Pinkowski and Travis Pippin called a meeting before the Jags even left their home rink earlier in the day.

“They were going over stuff on the board (but) I wasn’t in there. That’s their deal,” Brithinee said. “It’s the players’ time.

With the win, the Jaguars advanced to the regional final which was played last night in Allen Park.
