Flat Rock and Huron will meet in a Class B district final for the second-straight season after each team earned impressive, yet different victories in the semifinals Wednesday night in Flat Rock.
Huron took on Grosse Ile in the nightcap and outlasted the Red Devils for an exciting 40-38 overtime win.
The Chiefs led 36-32 with less than a minute remaining in regulation, but a stressful turn of events led to an extra period.
Grosse Ile’s Katherine Tobin was fouled with 34.2 seconds remaining and the freshman calmly knocked down both free throws. Immediately after the second free throw fell, Huron’s bench was whistled for a technical foul, awarding the Red Devils two more tries from the stripe and possession. Tobin made both technical free throws to tie the score 36-36 and the score remained there until the end of regulation.
The Red Devils scored the first two points in overtime after a basket by Madyson Jankowski with 2:20 remaining. Huron’s Lissa Kowalewski tied the score at 38 with a pair of free throws with just over a minute remaining. Teammate Caitlyn Davidson sealed the game with 54 seconds remaining with after converting both attempts on a one-and-one for a 40-38 Huron advantage.
That would end the scoring as neither team could get a good look in the final minute and scrappy defense on both ends resulted in a half dozen jump-balls in the final 60 seconds.
“We played good defense and it was a good game,” Huron Coach Jim Kalbfleisch said. “It was real good and real physical.”
It was a game of runs for three and a half quarters and began with Grosse Ile carrying an 11-8 lead after one quarter. The Red Devils held an 18-10 lead midway through the second quarter, but were unable to score for the remainder of the half and the Chiefs climbed to within one point at the break, 18-17.
Huron completed its 9-0 run early in the third quarter and took a 19-18 lead, but Grosse Ile went on to score the next six points for a 24-19 four minutes into the half. Momentum remained a fickle beast and Huron regained control with an 11-1 run that carried into the fourth quarter and the Chiefs led 30-25 one minute into the final period. The Chiefs would maintain an advantage throughout the quarter until the final minute of regulation.
Both teams excelled on defense and Huron accomplished a major objective heading into the game by holding the usually potent Red Devils scoreless from beyond the arc.
“That was our goal was to take away their threes,” Kalbfleisch said. “We came in and did what we wanted to do.”
Kowalewski led the Chiefs with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Hailey Richardson had 10 points and Kristin Wolber added five points, four steals and four assists.
Grosse Ile’s Alex Carney was plagued with foul trouble for much of the game, but still managed a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds before fouling out three minutes into overtime. Jankowski had six points and seven rebounds, and Vanessa Wojno also scored six.
In the early game, a tale of two halves resulted in a 48-29 Flat Rock victory over Cabrini.
Despite the 19-point margin, Cabrini gave the host Rams all that they could handle in the first two quarters.
Flat Rock led 12-6 after one quarter, but was held scoreless for nearly six minutes in the second quarter in a stretch that saw the Monarchs tie the game 12-12 with three minutes remaining in the half. The Rams woke up offensively a minute later and scored seven points in the final 2:10 to take a 19-15 lead into the half.
Cabrini was pesky defensively throughout the half and limited Flat Rock shot opportunities by causing a number of turnovers.
“Cabrini had a great game plan,” Flat Rock Coach Marc Villemure said. “Their scheme did exactly what they wanted to do and took us out of our rhythm.
“We played poorly and it was a little scary there.”
The Rams exhibited the inverse of the old adage “the best defense is a good offense” by using a suffocating press after the half to create offensive opportunities. Leading 19-17 less than two minutes into the third, the Rams went on an 11-2 run over the next four minutes thanks to a full-court press that led to turnovers, easy baskets and free throw opportunities.
“Once we were able to get to the foul line and score, it allowed us to set our defense and bring a lot of heat and that definitely made a difference in the second half,” Villemure said.
The Rams led 35-23 entering the fourth quarter and extended their lead with a defensive effort that continued to stymie the Monarchs, giving up only six Cabrini points in the final eight minutes.
Flat Rock turned in a balanced score effort and was led by sophomore Paige Villemure’s 10 points. Freshman Morgan Villemure had nine points, Haley Boyer had eight points and eight rebounds and Morgan Kaiser added six points, seven rebounds and four steals.
Emily Zgoda had to work for her points and led Cabrini with nine points and four steals. Kendel Adamus was perfect from the free throw line and scored all six of her points at the stripe.
The win secured Flat Rock’s third-straight district final appearance and will allow the Rams a shot at revenge after last year’s 46-41 overtime loss to Huron.
“Hopefully our experience will come through,” Villemure said. “Being our third one, we’ve got a few players who have been with us for all three and that should help, especially at home.”
Friday’s district final between the Rams and the Chiefs will take place at 7 p.m. in Flat Rock.
