GIRLS' BASKETBALL: Truman, Allen Park reach district finals

Truman District Semi-final



The Truman girls’ basketball team won their second game in three days, securing them a spot in the district finals on Friday.

The Cougars defeated Belleville 58-34 on Wednesday night to secure their spot.

Truman jumped out strong and led 18-2 after the first eight minutes and the defense stayed strong and the team took a 31-8 lead at the half.

The Cougars were paced by April Micheaux with 26 points.

Ciara Bush finished with nine points and Mariah Hopkins had four.

Truman plans West John Glenn in the district final on Friday night.



Allen Park Semi-finals



The Allen Park girls’ basketball team defeated Dearborn Edsel Ford 34-21 to secure themselves a spot in the district semi-finals on Friday night.

The Jags took a 9-4 led after the first quarter and only allowed their opponent two points in the second for a 15-6 lead at the half.

In the second half, Allen Park did not allowed the Thunderbirds more than nine points in either of the quarters.

“We played some very good defense tonight,” Allen Park Coach Chuck Perez said.

Perez was also pleased with his team’s free-throw efforts.

The Jags were 14-for-19 on the night, nine of the points coming in the fourth quarter.

Casey Bowdell was four-for-four from the line in crunch time and the team saw scoring from nine different players.

Freshman Erin Fish led the way with seven points. Amy Trionfi and Hailey Lazarek each had six, Bowdell finished with four and Erica Cavazoa, Olivia Keeley, Sara Polatka and Hannah Holder all had two points.

Freshman Audrey Newstead had an excellent game, going three-for-four from the foul line and playing solid defense.

The Jags face Dearborn Heights Crestwood on Friday night for the finals.





Melvindale Semi-finals



The Melvindale girls’ basketball team saw their season end Wednesday night after a 56-36 loss to River Rouge in their district semi-finals.

“They did a good job of responding to our runs,” Melvindale Coach Tom Shick said. “We just used too much energy to catch up.”

Rouge was led by Starnisha Harris with 18 points and Sebreanna Beard with 12 points.

Auriel Harris led the Cardinals with 15 points and Paige Filipowski had nine points.

Harris, a senior, finished her season with 409 points and 1,216 career points.
