After being blanked 5-0 by arch-rival Riverview just over a week ago, it would have been understandable if the Grosse Ile hockey team had rolled over against the Bucs in their playoff game Wednesday night in Trenton.
But they didn’t
After sporting Riverview a 3-0 lead, Grosse Ile came back, dominated the later portions of the second period and the early part of the third and got the score to 3-2 before the momentum and the magic failed.
Riverview scored four straight goals in the last 10 minutes of the contest and coasted to a 7-2 victory.
The game began as if the Bucs were going to run the Red Devils out of Kennedy Arena as they outshot Grosse Ile 15-5 in the first period and led 1-0 in Mike Aguis unassisted goal.
Alex Testy and Chris Hass scored for Riverview in the second period as the lead grew to 3-0.
But Grosse Ile converted a late 5-on-3 opportunity and suddenly the game got competitive.
Phil Moran got the first Grosse Ile goal of the night and less than two minutes into the third period, just as a Riverview penalty expired, Aaron Porcarelli made it 3-2.
In the ensuing minutes, Grosse Ile had several great chances to tie the game but failed to get it done.
Tim Lyons broke the spell and Grosse Ile’s back with his goal at the 5:57 mark.
It was all Riverview from that point on.
Agius netted is second of the night, Brian Bachanak scored and Jake St. Andre capped the night for Riverview.
After being outshot by 10 in the first period, Grosse Ile got back to even at 26 shot all midway through the third, but Riverview late third-period domination push the final shot total to 40-29.
Grosse Ile’s season ended with the loss, while Riverview advanced to Saturday night’s regional final at Southgate Civic Center against the winner of the Carlson-Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central game.

David Laurain and the Riverview Pirates beat Grosse Ile for the second time in little more than a week Wednesday night. This time the count was 7-2 and the win was a big one because it knocked the Red Devils out of the MHSAA state playoffs and send the Pirates into the Division 3 regional final at Southgate’s Civic Center Saturday night.
