Cabrini lost a pair of games last week in two dramatically different ways with defeats to Dearborn Unified and Allen Park.

On Wednesday, the Monarchs gave one of their best efforts of the season, but fell to Dearborn 2-1.

“We played our best game of the year,” Cabrini Coach Bill Alvis said. “We played like a team defensively.”

Dearborn led 1-0 after one period, but the Monarchs tied the game 1-1 midway through the second with a goal from Joe Hay assisted by Steve Hecmanczuk.

The momentum was short-lived as a bad bounce resulted in Dearborn’s eventual game-winning goal minutes later.

Despite the loss, Alvis was very pleased with his team’s effort.

“Our forwards were defensively responsible and it was a really solid game,” Alvis said. “After the game, the entire team was in very high spirits because they played so well.”

Things went a little differently on Saturday as the Monarchs fell 9-1 against in-city rival Allen Park.

The Monarchs and the Jags started a new tradition this season with the annual matchup between the Allen Park-based schools being deemed a battle for “The Cup,” which is a new trophy awarded to the yearly winner of the rivalry game.

The Jags won in a big way and jumped all over the Monarchs early with a 4-0 lead after one period.

Dominic Czajka finally put Cabrini on the board with a backhander assisted by Tyler Adams.

Allen Park prevented any further damage and pulled away for the lopsided victory.

“They played really strong and came after it,” Alvis said. “Allen Park came into the game really, really wanting it. They were the quicker team and they used their quickness to expose our defense.”
