After recording two consecutive shutouts, the Riverview hockey team continued its winning streak with a 4-3 overtime victory over St. Mary Catholic Central last weekend.

The Bucs took the first lead of the game and the teams alternated goals before Riverview’s Timmy Lyons got the game-winner five minutes into overtime.

The win put the Bucs at 7-0 in the Huron League and 16-7 overall.

It is the second year in a row the team has won the Huron League.

“It’s exciting for Riverview,” Coach Al Taurence said. “We’ve had a pretty good year.”

Alex Testy got the Riverview scoring started with a power play goal.

Gerald Helstowski and Brian Bachnak had the assits.

Helstowski got another assist, along with Brandon Mulligan on the second goal from Shane Nolak which pleased Taurence.

“Nolak got the second goal which was nice to see,” Taurence said. “(He’s) one of our second linters we count on for defensive purposes. He’s an up and coming player who’s been playing really well the last five, six games.”

Bachnak added a goal to his previous assist with help from Joe Vitale and Lyons.

And in the overtime, Lyons capped off the scoring with help from Bachnak and Helstowski who recorded a playmaker.

The Bucs did not play their normal rough game, choosing instead to focus on the importance of their first pre-regional game on Monday night.

“It was a good win for us to go into regionals,” Taurence said.
