A week after falling to Trenton, the Grosse Ile Red Devils earned a measure of revenge and a trip to the district semifinals with a 54-42 victory over the Trojans in the Class B District quarterfinals in Flat Rock on Tuesday.

Trenton upended Grosse Ile 47-43 last Tuesday and the Red Devils were determined to keep history from repeating itself in districts.

“I’m very happy because we lost to Trenton last Tuesday,” Grosse Ile Coach Sandy Tobin said. “I’m happy that the team pulled it together and they had a goal and they came in and accomplished that by being disciplined and playing well together.”

The Red Devils led 14-9 after one quarter and scored the first six points of the second to take a 20-9 lead two minutes into the quarter.

Trenton fought back and scored the final six points of the quarter to climb within five – 22-17 – at the half.

Grosse Ile held the Trojans scoreless for the first three minutes of the second half and upped its lead to 10 points early in the third.

The Red Devils held a lead near 10 points for much of the quarter and carried a 37-28 lead into the fourth quarter.

Grosse Ile’s Madyson Jankowski led the Red Devils with nine points in the quarter and helped lead the team to a 15-11 advantage in the quarter.

In the fourth, the Red Devils took advantage of their free throw opportunities (9-for-13) to keep the Trojans at arm’s length over the final eight minutes.

Grosse Ile converted 16-of-23 free throw attempts for the game whereas Trenton was only 1-for-3.

“They didn’t really penetrate so much today, so they weren’t putting us in the position to foul them,” Tobin said.

Another positive for Grosse Ile came on the glass where the Red Devils outrebounded Trenton 34-26 with many of those rebounds coming on the offensive end.

Tobin credits her point guard for creating opportunities down low for easy shots and rebounding opportunities for her team.

“(Maddy) Jankowski, my point guard, really controlled the game today and really made some beautiful passes today that opened some things up for us and allowed us to be more effective inside,” Tobin said.

Jankowski led the Red Devils with 17 points and five assists. Alex Carney had 13 points and 14 rebounds, Vanessa Wojno added nine points and seven boards and Sarah Moehr scored six for Grosse Ile.

Trenton’s Paige Machnacki paced the Trojans with 16 points and nine rebounds. Barb Czarnecki knocked down three triples and scored 11 for the Trojans and Stephanie Galczyk had six.

Grosse Ile will take on Huron in the district semifinals on Wednesday at 7 PM.

In the early game, Cabrini was utterly dominant in a 69-28 win over Summit Academy.

The Monarchs wasted little time pulling ahead and took a 12-2 lead less than four minutes into the game.

A suffocating defensive effort stymied the Dragon offense and gave Cabrini a 39-11 halftime lead in the rout.

Sahdia Washington was the long offensive bright spot for Summit as the junior was responsible for 19 of the Dragons’ 28 points. Washington also had six steals in the loss.

Cabrini received a balanced scoring effort with a number of players appearing on the stat sheet, but Emily Zgoda and Kasey Jodway were the stars of the game.

Zgoda gave a dominant all-around effort with 15 points, eight steals, seven assists and four rebounds. Jodway was a force in the post and recorded a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds.

Sophia Formella and Emily Deeter each had eight points in the win and Carlee Alley added five points and eight rebounds.

Cabrini will take on host Flat Rock in the district semifinals on Wednesday at 5:30 PM.
