GIRLS' BASKETBALL: Trojans handle Grosse Ile (VIDEO)

The Grosse Ile girls’ basketball team lost a heartbreaker at home to Trenton on Tuesday. A wild, back-and-forth game ended with the Trojans in front 47-43.

The game belonged to Trenton’s Paige Machnacki. With the game close after the half, she took over and never looked back.

The game started slowly for the Trenton star, with only three in the first half. However, in the second half she dropped in an easy 20. She ended up with a total of 23 points, hitting four three-pointers and going 5-of-6 from the free throw line.

“She’s a good shooter and she would not let us lose tonight,” said Trenton Coach Rob Sauter.

Trenton as a whole started hot on offense. The Trojans hit three three-pointers and got six points down low in the first quarter to take a 15-6 lead.

In the second quarter, the Red Devils clamped down on defense. Trenton did not score until there were less than two minutes left in the second period.

The defensive effort plus timely shooting helped Grosse Ile go on a 13-0 run.

Coming off the bench, freshman Kate Tobin knocked down a couple threes to get the offense rolling.

By halftime Grosse Ile had taken back the lead. A key in Grosse Ile’s comeback was the play of senior Vanessa Wojno, who scored 12 points.

“She was really doing well on defense, and on offense she runs the court so well for a post player,” said Red Devils Coach Sandy Tobin.

By the end of the third quarter though, Trenton had taken back the lead.

It was at that point that the Machnacki show began.

She scored 11 points in the period and hit three shots from beyond the arc.

Only down three points with less than two minutes left, Grosse Ile was able to make one final push. Big shots from Mady Jankowski and Jazzy Teen helped the Devils into a one point lead.

Trenton needed a bucket, badly. Instead of going to their scoring machine Machnacki, it was another team captain’s turn to be a hero.

Not having scored since the first quarter, Barb Czarnecki pulled up from downtown and with ice-water in her veins buried a three-pointer.

After a couple of made Grosse Ile free-throws, it was the final Trenton team captain’s turn to show up.

Stephanie Galczyk knocked down a hook shot to give her team a lead with 40 seconds left.

Grosse Ile turned the ball over and after three Paige Machnacki free-throws final buzzer rang.
