GIRLS' BASKETBALL: Jags outlast Carlson in overtime (PHOTO AND VIDEO)

The Carlson girls’ basketball team seemed determined to end their losing streak when they traveled to Allen Park on Tuesday night but the Jaguars had other plans and handed the Marauders a 51-44 overtime loss.

Allen Park led after every quarter before triples dominated Carlson’s fourth quarter and forced overtime.

The Marauders took the first lead of the game with free throws from Brittany Gniewek, but the Jags responded quickly and took an 11-8 lead at the half.

Allen Park’s Hailey Lazarek dominated in the second quarter and accounted for all of the Jaguar offense with her eight points.

During the quarter, she knocked in a triple and went three-for-five from the foul line.

Carlson’s offense was held to just two field goals in the second quarter to give the Jags a 19-12 lead at the half.

After the break, the Marauders increased their intensity and outscored their opponent 29-23 in the second half to force overtime.

The third quarter was a back-and-forth contest with the teams switching leads every few seconds and late triples gave the Jaguars a 31-28 advantage after three.

The Marauders stayed neck and neck with Allen Parkdown the stretch in the fourth quarter thanks to the hot shooting of Becca Browning , who poured in four triples in the quarter, including one with seconds left to tie the game.

“She came out on fire,” Coach Phil Carlson said after the win.

Allen Park Coach Chuck Perez said he knew his team had several situations to deal with in the overtime.

“We talked about how it was gonna be hard,” he said. “We’re trying to stop the penetration of (Sarah Carlson) but we also had to stop (Gniewek) and then (Browning) was starting to hit.

“We had to help on D, but we had to get out to the perimeter too. We were in a stick situation.”

But the Jags weren’t intimidated and outscored the Marauders 9-2 in the extra period for the win.

Casey Bowdell dominated the overtime with seven of the nine points scored.

She finished the night with a double-double of 16 points and 11 rebounds. All of her scoring came in the fourth quarter and overtime.

Lazarek topped the score chart with 22 points to go with her five rebounds.

Amy Trionfi recorded seven points, including two triples and brought in three rebounds.

“Things just went well for us,” Perez said. “Casey started attacking the rim, we had good passes (and) good overall defense.

“It was a mix of certain players playing good at certain times and did their job and they switched in and out. It was a team effort.”

Overall, Perez was pleased with his team’s win in their first of three games this week.

“It was exciting,” he said. “We let them back to tie it, but I think we played really, really strong in overtime.”

The Marauders were led by Browning with her 12 points to go with four rebounds.

Sarah Carlson followed with 11 points and brought down six boards.

Gniewek led the team in rebounds with 10 and also recorded four points.

The Marauders went five-for-eight from the line, but Coach Carlson said they still missed too many shots.

“We missed too many shots and layups,” Carlson said. “You cannot win when you’re missing 10 layups. (There were) 17 missed shots in the first half. Bunnies from our post players and down low.”

Overall, Carlson thought it was a good basketball game and said his girls made a good fight of it.

“They played hard,” he said. “The kids played hard and if you lose and they play hard, that’s all you can ask for.”

The Marauders are back in action at home on Friday for senior night when they host Airport.

The Jags travel to New Boston Huron tomorrow and host Annapolis on Friday.
