BOYS' BASKETBALL: Private school roundup

On Feb. 12, the Inter-City boys’ basketball team fell to 0-2 against Grosse Pointe University Liggett with a 56-52 home loss.

“It was a close game,” Inter-City Coach Mark Kraatz said. “It was a one possession, one play, one way or another kind of game.

“We struggled. We didn’t play well and Liggett’s a good team. They’re a solid team and very senior-laden.”

Nathanael Packwood played well in defeat with 21 points and nine rebounds.

Evan Kraatz had 13 points and eight assists and Luke Barber scored 10 in the loss.

The Chargers bounced back on Friday with a 60-41 victory over Plymouth Christian.

Evan Kraatz set the tone early in this one and made his first five three-point attempts in the first quarter.

The hot start led to Inter-City holding a near 20-point lead at the half.

“It was a good rebound from what we had on Tuesday,” Kraatz said.

Packwood added 15 points and 12 rebounds in the win while freshman Brady Fressel provided seven points.

On Saturday, a much anticipated matchup with Southfield Christian exceeded the hype, but Inter-City wound up on the losing end in heartbreaking fashion in a 47-46 loss.

The Chargers led by five points with 45 seconds remaining in regulation, but turnovers and missed free throws resulted in a late run by Southfield.

Trailing by one, Southfield Christian ended up with the ball under the Inter-City basket with 2.5 seconds remaining and the visitors executed a tip-in play on the inbounds pass to beat the clock and the Chargers in the final seconds.

“I thought we played well enough to win,” Kraatz said. “We played well for 31 minutes and 30 seconds. It was disappointing to say the least.”

Evan Kraatz led the Chargers with 21 points and six assists.

Packwood, who has been one of the Chargers most consistent players this season, fouled out in the fourth quarter and was stuck on the bench during the turbulent final stretch.

The Chargers (13-4, 9-3 Michigan Independent – Blue) will finish their league schedule this week. They traveled to Parkway Christian on Tuesday and will remain on the road on Thursday at Lutheran Northwest.
