BOYS' BASKETBALL: Catholic League roundup

Cabrini upped its winning streak to seven games with a pair of victories last week highlighted by an opening round win in the Catholic League playoffs on Saturday.

The Monarchs traveled to Ladywood over the weekend for a C-D Division quarterfinal matchup with Marine City Cardinal Mooney and cruised to a 69-50 victory.

Andrew Smith scored 19 and Ian Wagner had 18 for the hot-handed Monarchs and the team shot over 50 percent – 26-for-49 – on the night.

Mike Ball added 12 points in the win.

On Monday, Cabrini hosted Flat Rock in a non-league matchup and a late rally powered the Monarchs to a 55-53 victory.

A 19-9 second quarter advantage gave Cabrini a 28-22 lead entering the half, but a cold spell in the third quarter allowed the Rams to fight back in the third for a 37-37 tie entering the final quarter.

Flat Rock held a four-point lead with less than two minutes remaining, but turnovers in the waning minutes doomed the Rams.

Cabrini’s comeback effort was highlighted by a long three-pointer from Ian Wagner that put the Monarchs ahead by one with less than 30 seconds remaining for the game’s final lead change.

Smith was impressive and led the Monarchs with 27 points and 15 rebounds. Wagner added 16 in the win.

Flat Rock’s Mike Chickeral led the Rams with 24 points and Justin Nickols added 15.

Cabrini (11-6) faced Madison Heights Bishop Foley at Marian on Tuesday in the Catholic League semifinals. The winner will compete in the Catholic League Championship game at Calihan Hall on Sunday.

Richard splits

Gabriel Richard split a pair of games last week with a win over Frankel Jewish Academy and a loss to Madison Heights Bishop Foley in the quarterfinals of the Catholic League playoffs.

On Thursday, the Pioneers locked up sole possession of second place in the Intersectional II division of the Catholic League with a 57-47win over Jewish Academy.

The Pioneers built a healthy 16-point lead near halftime, but Jewish Academy whittled away at the deficit and cut it to four with two minutes remaining.

Jacob Camilleri ended the Jewish Academy momentum and threat with an offensive rebound and put-back that drew a foul and put the Pioneers comfortably ahead late.

Camilleri and Danny Baum each scored 16 to lead the Pioneers and Colton Jarratt came up with some big baskets down the stretch and chipped in eight points.

“The kids wanted second place,” Richard Coach Kris Daiek said. “For a program that had three wins two years ago to get a second-place finish, that’s not bad.”

On Saturday, the Pioneers fell in the opening round of league playoffs to Bishop Foley 57-33 at Livonia Ladywood.

“They outclassed us,” Daiek said. “They have some pretty good athletes.”

Tyler Blazszak led Richard with 12 points and Camilleri added eight.

The Pioneers traveled to Livingston Christian on Tuesday.
