BOYS' BASKETBALL: Huron League roundup (PHOTO)

Chiefs hang onto third place

Tyler Olson and the Huron Chiefs split their two most recent games and retained their hold of third place in the Huron League standings.

In a week that saw all four local Huron League teams split a pair of league games, Huron remained in sole possession of third-place in the standings after going 1-1.

Milan and Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central have run roughshod over the rest of the Huron League this season and Huron drew the unenviable task of hosting the Falcons on Tuesday in a 67-35 home loss.

“They came out and took charge of the game right away and we did not answer very well,” Huron Coach Joe Cieslak said. “There’s no other way to say it. They blew us out.”

Karan Ghuman led the Chiefs with 16 points in the loss.

Huron rebounded at home on Friday with a 52-47 victory over Carleton Airport.

The Chiefs trailed by nine points at the half thanks in large part to Huron big man Tony Flaim getting into some early foul trouble.

The senior stayed off the bench after the break and the Chiefs were able to apply pressure in the second half to pull ahead of the Jets.

“We were able to turn up our defense in the second half,” Cieslak said. “We went to a trapping defense and caused some turnovers for some easy baskets off of that.

“Our offensive production stepped up in the second half because of that.”

Flaim led the Chiefs with 15 points and seven boards. Ghuman scored 14 and Bill Ames added 10 points and three assists.

The Chiefs (9-7, 8-4 Huron League) hosted Riverview on Tuesday and will remain home against Grosse Ile, which trails Huron by one game in the league standings, on Friday.

GI goes 1-1

Grosse Ile’s eight-game home stand came to an end last week with mixed results as the Red Devils defeated Airport before falling hard against Milan.

On Tuesday, the Red Devils overcame a horrendous start to defeat Airport at home 52-41.

Grosse Ile trailed 12-2 out of the gate, but fought back to cut the deficit to one point – 23-22 – at the half.

Will Sassack returned from injury for the Devils and was an instant shot-in-the-arm off the bench.

“He came into the game and was instant energy,” Friel said.

Another third quarter advantage, this one being 14-6, allowed the Devils to pull away.

The score remained close in the fourth quarter, but a strong showing from Andrew Mitroka, who scored all nine of his points in the final eight minutes, helped Grosse Ile secure the victory.

McCary led the way with 16 points and Sassack added 13 in his return to action.

The Red Devils remained home on Friday against Milan and fell 54-35.

The Red Devils (10-7, 7-5 Huron League) will travel to Flat Rock on Wednesday and will travel to Huron on Friday.

Rams split league games

On Tuesday, the Rams traveled to Milan and fell to the league-leading Big Reds 83-49.

Mike Chickeral led Flat Rock with 11 points.

The Rams washed the bad taste out of their mouths on Friday with a payback victory over Riverview 63-59.

On Jan. 22, Riverview rallied to defeat Flat Rock by four in overtime. This time around, the Rams finished off their local foes in regulation.

The Rams took an eight-point halftime lead after outscoring the Bucs 18-7 in the second quarter for a first half advantage.

The Bucs fought back late and cut the deficit to four points, but the Rams forced a few key turnovers down the stretch to avoid another overtime game.

“What cost us the game was turnovers,” Riverview Coach Sam Lamb said. “Flat Rock did a great job with their half-court trap on a number of occasions and they scored off of those turnovers that they were able to create.

“I definitely give them credit. They did a wonderful job.”

The offensive output put forth by his players was a welcome sight to Flat Rock Coach Dave Bogataj.

“It was a good win for us,” Bogataj said. “When we score 63 points, we’re happy with that.”

Chickeral was tremendous in the Flat Rock victory and led all scorers with 26 points.

Justin Nickols had 13 for the Rams and Darris Hampton added 10.

The Bucs turned in a balanced scoring attack with four players in double-figures led by Khalil Neal and Greg Burris with 12 each.

Max Mousouleas had 10 points and 13 rebounds in the loss and Nolan Glime also chipped in 10.

“It was nice to see balanced scoring with them sharing the ball,” Lamb said. “We were just knocking down open shots, which we’ve had some trouble with in a lot of games.”

Flat Rock (5-12, 4-8 Huron League) will host Grosse Ile on Wednesday at old Flat Rock High School and will close out its Huron League schedule on Friday at home against Carleton Airport.

On Tuesday, the Bucs earned their third league win of the season and second win of the year over Monroe Jefferson 54-47.

Riverview held an advantage for most of the game, but the Bucs made it a point to be more assertive in the second half after shooting only two free throws in the opening two quarters.

“We did a really good job in the second half of being more aggressive and getting to the free throw line,” Lamb said. “It helped us keep our lead.”

After being outshot 13-2 at the free throw line in the first half, Riverview converted 7-of-10 second half free throws to help seal the victory in the final quarter.

Burris was efficient in the victory and scored 20 points on 7-of-12 shooting. Mousouleas added seven points and 13 rebounds in the win.

Riverview (3-15, 3-9 Huron League) traveled to Huron on Tuesday and will close out its league season on Friday with a trip to SMCC.
