The Downriver League title remains Truman’s to lose after another perfect week for the Cougars that began with a 75-67 win over Allen Park.
The Cougars opened the game with a 22-12 lead after one quarter and the early advantage would prove important as the Jags outscored Truman 55-53 over the final three quarters.
Robert Whitehorn had a masterful all-around performance with 25 points, 10 rebounds and five assists.
The senior guard, who took only eight shots on the night, was particularly strong at the free throw line and shot an impressive 15-for-17 from the charity stripe with many of those coming in the game’s final minutes.
Devain Newbill 13 points and eight rebounds, Aaron Foster-Smith had 12 points and 12 rebounds, Anthony Wartley-Fritz had eight points and seven rebounds and D’ante Barrow added eight points, five rebounds and four steals.
Allen Park did not go quietly and cut the deficit to four points in the second half, but poor foul shooting (8-for-20) doomed the Jags in the long run.
“Being down 10 going into the second quarter and missing that many free throws will kill you,” Allen Park Coach Jim Victor said.
After Truman’s 66-25 win over Lincoln Park on Thursday, the Cougars improved to 13-3 on the season with a 10-1 Downriver League record.
Truman traveled to Roosevelt on Tuesday and will face off with second-place Trenton at home on Thursday in a game that will likely decide this year’s league champion.
Titans earn another upset
Two weeks after dealing league-leading Truman its only league loss of the season, Anderson pulled off another road upset on Thursday with a 58-48 victory over Trenton.
The Trojans, who currently sit in second place one game behind Truman, easily dispatched Anderson on Jan. 29 61-38.
Since then, the Titans have won four-straight road games and gained a measure of revenge on Thursday.
Trenton appeared to be in control in the first half and carried a 31-25 lead into the break.
The Titans trailed by five entering the fourth quarter before a 16-2 run highlighted a 23-8 Anderson scoring advantage over the final eight minutes to seal the victory.
“We just started getting easy shots,” Anderson Coach Dave Pratt said. “We started penetrating a little bit and our defense created a few transition baskets, which helped.”
Connor Phee led the Titans with 16 points and Juwan Graham added 14 off the bench.
“We’ve played a lot of road games this year and they don’t get rattled playing on the road,” Pratt said. “We’ve got a lot of confidence right now.
“We expect to go out and compete with anyone left on our schedule, that’s for sure.”
Trenton’s Jerry LaBell made five three-pointers and paced the Trojans with 16 points. Jason Zahran had 15 points, five assists and four steals in the loss and Christian Mercure scored eight.
The Trojans are no worse for wear in the league standings after the loss as the crossover game does not count in the league standings.
While the win does not help
On Tuesday, the Titans traveled to Kennedy and defeated the Eagles 54-38.
Kennedy jumped out to a 14-6 lead after one quarter, but the Titans fired back and took control in the second quarter.
The Titans received a balanced scoring effort as Phee scored 10, Freitag scored nine and Dejon Matthews added eight.
Anderson (11-5, 6-5 DRL) hosted Melvindale on Tuesday and will close out its league season at home on Thursday against Carlson.
Trojans beat Bears
Trenton improved to 9-2 in Downriver League play on Tuesday after a lopsided third quarter powered the Trojans to a 67-53 home victory over Roosevelt.
After a tight first half, the Trojans scored the first 16 points of the second half and outscored the Bears 27-5 in the third quarter.
“We win games because of our defense,” Trenton Coach Rick Morrow said. “When we turn it up and we get aggressive and we start trapping and rotating, that’s what we get and the third quarter showed it.
“We came out and I’m proud of these kids. They played hard tonight.”
Trenton looked primed to put the game out of reach in the early going by opening the contest with a 13-2 advantage in the first four minutes.
Needing a shot in the arm, Roosevelt Coach Dave Cramton brought Donovan Stewart off the bench and the sophomore rewarded the decision by tallying assists on three Roosevelt three-pointers and by knocking down a triple of his own to bring the Bears back into the game with a 14-4 run to close the quarter for a 17-16 deficit after eight minutes.
The offenses stalled a bit in the second quarter and played remained even with Trenton carrying a 27-26 advantage into the break. Roosevelt’s Devan Stewart led all scorers in the half with 12 points and Trenton’s Jason Zahran led the Trojans with nine.
After halftime, Trenton could not miss and Roosevelt could not buy a bucket as the Trojans opened the third with a 16-0 run that spanned nearly five minutes.
Dan Mercure played a key role in the Trojan run as the senior jumped into a number of passing lanes and came away with steals that led to layups for himself and his teammates.
“He’s a hustler,” Morrow said. “He hustles for 32 minutes. He’s just an aggressive kid.”
A Divon Robinson three-pointer finally ended the Roosevelt scoring drought with 3:20 remaining in the third, but the damage was done as Trenton went into the fourth with a 54-31 lead.
Roosevelt continued to fight in the fourth quarter and knocked down four three-pointers in the period, but the Bears could never get closer than 14 points and dropped their second straight Downriver League game.
“We had one strong comeback early on, but we had nothing left in us,” Cramton said. “Trenton beat us, hands-down.”
Zahran had 20 points, 10 rebounds and four steals in the victory to lead Trenton. Christian Mercure had 16 points, Dan Mercure had 12 points, five steals and five assists and Dan Hall added 11 points and 10 boards. Trenton’s five starters accounted for all 67 Trojan points and junior Jerry LaBell rounded out the scoring with eight.
Devan Stewart had 22 points, six rebounds and four steals for Roosevelt while freshman Tyler Thorington added eight points and nine rebounds and Robinson scored eight.
Trenton (12-4, 9-2 DRL) hosted Lincoln Park on Tuesday and will travel to Truman on Thursday for a battle with the league-leading Cougars.
Roosevelt ended its two-game skid on Thursday with a 57-46 win over Allen Park.
The Jags settled for jumpers throughout the first half and found themselves in a 28-20 hole at the half.
After taking a more aggressive stance after the break, Allen Park climbed within four points in the third quarter, but could get no closer as Roosevelt kept the Jags at bay by making free throws down the stretch.
“It was a much-needed win, especially after last week with Trenton and Lincoln Park,” Cramton said. “We were much, much more balanced and much, much less selfish than the Trenton game.
“Hopefully, we’re going to get on the right track.”
Stewart and Jacob Lavis each had 16 points and Damon Singleton had 11 points and nine rebounds in the win.
“It’s one of those things where we’re right there playing tough against these good teams, but we just kind find a way to get those wins,” Allen Park Coach Jim Victor said. “It’s not that we’re coming out flat. We’re working hard, but we’re just missing layups and free throws.
“We’re right there. It’s just about getting them to understand that every possession is so important if you want to beat these great teams. If we keep working hard, hopefully some good things will happen for them.”
Tyler Warga led the Jags with 14 points and Antonio Reviere had eight off the bench.
Roosevelt (12-5, 7-5 DRL) hosted Truman on Tuesday and will remain home on Thursday against Kennedy.
Allen Park (7-10, 5-7 DRL) traveled to Woodhaven on Tuesday and will host Lincoln Park in its DRL finale.
