GIRLS' BASKETBALL: Catholic League Roundup (PHOTO)

Turnovers and cold shooting kept Gabriel Richard from repeating as Catholic League champions Sunday afternoon.

The Pioneers (11-7) scored 14 points in the final three quarters at the University of Detroit Mercy’s Calihan Hall and fell 45-25 to Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes in the C-D title game.

Richard led 6-0 after two Morgan Casanova three-pointers and were ahead 11-8 by the end of the first quarter but went cold from there. The Pioneers turned the ball over 21 times and, when they could get into a halfcourt offense, missed a myriad shots.

The Lakers (15-2), who have won four of the last five C-D crowns, took the lead for good early in the second quarter and never looked back. They turned a 19-15 halftime lead into a double-digit advantage minutes into the third quarter.

Ashley Henderson scored seven points and Casanova added six for Richard.

Ava Doetsch had 15 points and Lexie Robak scored 14 for Our Lady of the Lakes.

Cabrini

After being eliminated from the CHSL playoffs, the Cabrini girls’ basketball team responded with wins against Madison Heights Bishop Foley and Royal Oak Shrine.

After trailing most of the game on Thursday night, the Monarchs took Bishop Foley to overtime and defeated them 59-52.

Foley took a 12-7 led after the first quarter and led a close 22-20 game at the half.

With 1:02 left to play in regulation, the Monarchs were down by five points but managed to tie the game at 48-48 to force overtime.

The team came down and executed an offense set up by Emily Zgoda who netted a three-pointer with 34 seconds to go.

On the ensuing possession, Caitlyn Lefebrve stole the ball and got it to Zgoda who was fouled and made both free throws for the overtime.

In the overtime, Lefebrve stole the ball again and found Kasey Jodway under the net who capitalized to give the Monarchs the lead.

On the next possession, Lefebrve assisted Zgoda on a three pointer that put Cabrini ahead by three points.

Maria Vassallo iced the game with a three pointer on the next possession, and Lefebrve finished the scoring with two free throws to ensure the win.

Zgoda finished the game with a career high 31 points.

Lefebrve finished with seven points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals. Jodway had six points and five rebounds and Kendal Adamus had five points and eight rebounds.

The following night, the Monarchs hosted Royal Oak Shrine and defeated them 59-36.

Cabrini had a nice offensive game and took an 18-6 lead after the first quarter and led 36-11 at the half.

Coach Mike Rozanski said it was also possibly his team’s best defensive game for three quarters and said they limited Shrine’s offense to one shot on over 90 percent of their possessions.

“We were able to pressure their guards enough to disrupt their offense, made them settle for perimeter shots and controlled our defensive glass,” Rozanski said.

The Monarchs were again led by Zgoda with 17 points.

Emily Deeter recorded seven points in the win, Angela Nappo had six points, and Maria Vassallo scored five.

The Monarchs saw scoring from 13 of their 14 players and Rozanski described the win as a great team effort.
