The Grosse Ile girls’ basketball team secured a second-place finish in the Huron League on Thursday night with a 42-31 victory over Huron.
The Red Devils dominated on the glass, bringing down 42 rebounds to Huron’s 20 and went 11-for-14 from the free throw line, while the Chiefs went 0-for-5.
“We did a nice job on the boards and we shot 79 percent from the free throw line which is why we came out ahead in the game,” Grosse Ile Coach Sandy Tobin said.
Huron’s Lissa Kowalewski got the scoring started a minute into the game but the Red Devils took their lead back and led 9-8 after the first quarter.
Grosse Ile went 3-for-4 from the foul line in the second quarter and outscored the Chiefs 9-7 to take an 18-15 lead at the half.
In the third quarter, the Red Devils jumped out of the gate and scored 13 points to Huron’s five, including two three-pointers.
The Grosse Ile defense held off the Chiefs until 4:43 left in the third quarter when Kowalewski got the offense started again.
The Chiefs scored 10 in the final quarter for their highest scoring quarter of the game, and netted three three-pointers, but still came up short to the Red Devils.
Despite the win, Tobin thought the game was a rather slow one from both sides.
“I thought it was a sloppy game played by both teams,” Tobin said. “We just never really felt like we had our game together.
“We did not play as quick as we usually do and to give Huron credit they probably slowed us down with their defense.”
The Red Devils were led by Megan Swick with her 11 points and five rebounds.
Alex Carney dominated on the glass, bringing down 15 rebounds to go with her nine points.
Kowalewski led the Chiefs with her eight points and nine rebounds. Kristin Wolber added six points.
The two teams could possibly meet again in district play if Grosse Ile is able to defeat Trenton.
“I respect Huron and we are going to play them in districts if we beat Trenton,” Tobin said. “Not only were we coming out to win (tonight) for the league, but also we have to play them again for districts.
“(We’re) just kind of getting to know them a little bit better so we know how to take care of it then.”
Earlier in the week, Red Devils took first-place Flat Rock to an overtime game before falling 47-44 in overtime.
Grosse Ile took an early lead and led 10-5 after the first quarter, but the Rams bounced back and led 18-16 at the half.
The Red Devils continued pressing and took a 29-27 led after three quarters before the teams found themselves tied 39-39 and facing overtime, where the Rams prevailed.
“I thought our seniors really played big at the end of the game,” Flat Rock Coach Marc Villemure said. “Grosse Ile came out and out worked us for the better part of the game, but we were just able to find a way to pull out a win.”
Tobin said it was a heart-breaking but a well-played game.
“The team left everything on the floor and they should have no regrets,” she said. “It was a great game. Even though we finished short of our goal, I am glad we had the experience.
“It made us want to work harder to finish our season strong.”
Carney led the team with a double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds.
Mady Jankowski and Swick each had 10 points.
“It was Mady’s best game of the season,” Tobin said. “She was a fierce leader for us. We could not have asked her to do anymore.
“She played great defense, passed well, shot well and lead our team’s offense.”
Villemure was pleased with the play of Morgan Kaiser and Samantha Murphy and said Kaiser had a solid performance throughout the entire game and Murphy had one of her better games all around.
Kaiser led the team with 20 points. Murphy recorded eight points and six rebounds.
Later in the week, the Rams continued their unbeaten season with a 49-31 victory over Carleton Airport.
The Rams had a tough start and came out shooting poorly and did not play with their usual energy on the defensive end of the floor.
“Airport ran some good sets and our communication wasn’t very good in the first half,” Villemure said. “I thought we played a very good third quarter and held them to four points during that stretch.”
Kaiser again led the Rams with 12 points.
Hollie Rhodes had a solid game off the bench with 10 points and Haley Boyer led the team with 10 rebounds to go with her five points.
The Rams play Farmington Hills Mercy on Thursday for their final game of the regular season.
Before falling to Grosse Ile, the Chiefs had a 32-28 victory over Riverview earlier in the week.
The Bucs led 11-7 after the first quarter but the Chiefs turned things around and took a 20-16 lead at the half.
Richardson led the Chiefs with 12 points including two triples and three steals.
Kowalewski had nine points and three rebounds and Wolber finished with five rebounds to go with her four points.
Riverview was led by Anna Vega with 14 points, seven rebounds and one assist.
Michala Burke recorded seven points, nine rebounds, three steals and two assists, and Kelsey Brewer finished the night with six points, three rebounds and three steals.
The Bucs went one-for-two on the week with a 57-53 victory over Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central on Thursday.
The victory came after the teams saw two overtimes.
The Bucs trailed 11-8 after the first quarter but regained their lead and led 24-20 at the half.
The teams were tied 42-42 after four quarters and tied again 48-48 after the first overtime before the Bucs prevailed.
Brewer led the team with 19 points, five steals and three rebounds.
Kirsten Chambers had 11 points and one steal, Burke had 10 points, seven rebounds and two steals and Vega finished with eight points, eight rebounds and four steals.
Angela Zammit had four points and eight rebounds and Hannah Love had three points and eight rebounds.
The Bucs are off until regional play.
The Chiefs host Allen Park on tonight while the Red Devils hosted Trenton last night.
