HOCKEY: Richard beats Shrine for league title (PHOTO)

Playing on the same ice as our beloved Detroit Red Wings, the Gabriel Richard hockey team took advantage of playing on a big stage on Saturday by claiming its third Catholic League championship in four years with a 6-1 victory over Royal Oak Shrine at Joe Louis Arena.

The Pioneers earned their second-straight Division 2 Catholic League title in convincing fashion by putting the game out of reach in the first 17 minutes.

Richard’s Garret Yesue was dominant from the start and netted three of the Pioneers’ four first-period goals for an early 4-0 lead.

Yesue scored the game’s opening goal on a shot assisted by Devin Dickow and Brendan Damron.

Dickow got in on the scoring minutes later with a shot assisted by Damron and John Louria.

Yesue would add two more goals in the period to complete the scoring.

In the second period, Yesue scored his fourth goal of the game on a shot assisted by Devin Dickow.

After allowing Shrine’s lone goal, Richard’s Andrew Mancini scored the game’s final goal later in the period for the eventual final of 6-1.

Dickow and Damron each picked up three assists on the night.

After the win, Richard Coach Rick DeSana acknowledged the strong showings from the team leaders that led to the championship win.

“Garrett, Devin and Brendan are really communicating on the ice and it is making a big difference in making and completing some very nice plays,” DeSana said. “Matt Mandernach was very strong in goal.

“This was our third championship in four years and playing at the Joe made it extra special.”

Earlier in the week, Richard defeated Grosse Ile 8-1.

Yesue and Dickow each had two goals in the victory and the Pioneers also got scores from Mancini, Damron, Tommy Sorovetz and Nick Brannon.

John Ames had three assists in the win while Brannon, Eric Blevins, and John Rhind each had two and Louria, Mancini and Joe Lavine each tallied one.

“We are playing well as a team both defensively and offensively,” DeSana said. “Very proud of all the players and (their) effort.”

Cabrini splits

Cabrini continued its improved offensive play last week and split a pair of games with a blowout victory over Macomb Lutheran North and a close loss to Madison Heights Bishop Foley.

On Wednesday, the Monarchs overcame an early deficit with 10 unanswered goals in a 10-3 win over Lutheran North.

Cabrini gave up three quick goals in the opening period, but trailed only 3-2 entering the second after making a switch at goalie and by becoming more assertive on the offensive end.

“(Brett) Kates came in and stopped the bleeding right away,” Cabrini Coach Bill Alvis said. “Then we got the first goal and that got us going.”

Brendan Alvis scored Cabrini’s first goal with three minutes remaining in the first on a shot assisted by Jacob Mackie.

Mackie made it 3-2 minutes later with a scoring shot of his own assisted by Alvis and Bradley Chavis.

The Monarchs pulled away in the second period with five goals and added three more in the final period to complete the rout.

Mackie and Joe Hay each picked up two goals on the night while Chavis, Tyler Adams, Dominic Czajka and Wade Hemlinger each scored once.

Hemlinger’s goal was his first high school score.

Hay, Chavis and Alvis each picked up two assisted in the win while Sheldon Varhol, Jason Wilk, Mark Broshear and Jim Izzo each assisted once.

On Sunday morning, the Monarchs battled Bishop Foley in the Catholic League Showcase and fell 4-3.

Foley jumped out to a 2-0 lead and held the Monarchs scoreless until the 10-minute mark in the second period when Chavis found the back of the net with a goal assisted by Globke and Mackie.

After allowing another Foley score, Brendan Alvis made it 3-2 with 48 seconds remaining in the second period with a goal assisted by Mackie and Zac Weaver.

Foley scored with one minute remaining to take a late two-goal lead, but Globke answered six second later with a goal of his own to cut the deficit to one.

In the waning seconds, the Monarchs skated with an extra attacker after pulling the goalie, but could not cash in on a number of chances before time ran out.

“We outplayed them,” said Alvis, who’s Monarchs doubled Foley in shots 48-24. “On the goals that we gave up, we just weren’t really good with the puck in our own zone.

“They capitalized on their chances and we didn’t.”

Cabrini will travel to Dearborn on Wednesday and will battle Allen Park on Saturday.
