Downriver wrestling teams will be represented very well in the Division 1 state meet this year with three schools having nine wrestlers place during individual regionals this past weekend.
Southgate’s Alex Molloy earned himself another trip to the state meet with his first-place finish at 130.
Molloy recorded 13-0 and 13-1 major decisions in the quarter- and semi-finals before winning a 5-4 decision over Ypsilanti Lincoln’s Jordan Markey.
The victories improved Molloy’s season record to 52-3.
The Titans will also send four more wrestlers to the state meet.
At 112, Jarad Fernandez earned another trip to states after he finished second place.
He recorded a 6-2 decision before falling to champ Kyle Gillies of West John Glenn in an 8-4 match.
Raven Schmitt finished third at 119 and recorded a technical fall and a 10-4 decision before falling to eventual champion Mitch Rogaliner of Bedford.
Logan Parks, at 140, also finished third, and after an 8-3 decision, fell to Plymouth’s Alec Breckenridge 5-1.
Josh Lockwood (145 pounds) was the final Titan to place. He was also third.
Lockwood recorded a fall before falling himself to Victor Lindsey of Dearborn Fordson.
The Roosevelt Bears had a second- and fourth-place finish with the two wrestlers they will be sending to the state meet.
Quentin Santiago finished second at 135. After 5-3 and 6-0 decisions in his first two matches, he was pinned by champion Ken Bade of Novi Detroit Catholic Central.
Vince Pizzo finished fourth at 215 for the Bears.
After recording a fall, he suffered a 7-2 decision loss to West John Glen’s Jordan Brandon.
The Woodhaven Warriors will also send two wrestlers to the state meet.
Derek Hillman will be traveling to states for the second year after his second-place finish at 171.
Hillman recorded a fall and an 11-3 major decision before a fall to Detroit Catholic Central’s Drew Garcia.
Mickey Sutton will make his first trip to states at 160 after his fourth-place finish.
Sutton recorded a fall before losing a 10-4 decision to Salem’s Tyler Gross.
